The larger Antonovs were built by the Russians to prove the world wrong when most thought they were unable to match U.S. military heavy lift ability. One was used to fly in a long, heavy turbine/generator rotor for a power plant here a couple of years ago. Story was that it was the only aircraft in the world that could be leased by civilians that could do the job. |

The larger Antonov AN-225 Mriya, foreground in FB's pic, is no longer in use. Too many crashes/maint. problems. The EU leases the slightly smaller AN-124 fleet, aft, because Russia is too poor to fly it... We had one land here two months ago. The 124 looks almost exactly like a C-5. If you ask me, they copied us, just like the superfortress... Interesting note per discovery: The 225 bears so much weight that the entire floor is made of titanium. To $$$ for the US to build, but apparrently Russia has the richest titanium mines in the world. |

Another note: Checked out a C-5 today. In speaking with the crewchief, the oldest C-5 in service was built in 1968! The newest 1984... The entire fleet is getting retrofitted with a glass cockpit, fly by wire, new hydraulics, electric actuated redundent flight controls, and some structural upgrades. This will occur over time to the Alpha and Bravo models. Two Bravos were modified opening up the tail for ease of transport of titan missles... Our aging C-5 fleet is getting a facelift and ready for heavy lift for another 30 years... Just proves that our original is still the best!!! Too bad they wouldn't let me try out the decender reel... Now back to your regularly scheduled epic tale. GO FB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Message edited by charlieboy6649 on August 23, 2005) |

So the C5 will soldier on just like the B52...cool! Russa does have the largest titanium deposits, enough so that they made the hulls of a few classes of submarines out of it. They had problems with cracking for awhile I heard. Not a good thing or very inspireing I would think. In fact I think I heard that the An225's deck had the same problem. |

Ferris, Talked to JoAnne of American Sport Bike and we will meet up in Ocotillo on Saturday. I will be driving the truck down from LA loaded to the hilt, I am sure, with tents and related camping crap from the Ebear Collection, and my garage. I will also be bringing a cooler of beer from that little micro brewery located in Duarte, CA. Good thing JoAnne is bring some grub! I will also attempt to get the Yamaha TTR-250 into the truck with all the stuff. I want to do some sand surfing while waiting for you and related gang arrivals. Be prepared for it to be really warm...no, really hot. Everyone riding should be stopping and hydrating...not with Cokes and Iced Tea. That stuff will kill ya quicker than anything in hot weater. Anyone riding who starts to feel sleepy and really tired is starting to dehydrate. Look forward to everyones arrival....Later! |

Ok, Im going to call our Security Forces Folks at 7:30 to nail down requirements to ride "Temporarily" on base, and speaking with one of the lodging reps I should be able to nail down the rooms at 8:30 (Gotta wait for the reservation folks to come in.) Spoke with our operations personnel and got some clearification on the photo passes. Most of it is just dont take pictures of this or that and ask someone before you do. I'll let you know of any updates I get. I like that Epic'er and Epic'er Josh |

Jerry, I can attest that Josh is a great guy! Looks like you'll have a blast at Nellis. Going to help Mike on his bike tonight so he is ready to go from Grand Junction to Vegas. I use this Hydrapak: It worked great for my trek from Silverthorne, Co to Salt Lake City. Getting jazzed to ride with you, DBird |

Dbird, i talked with Mike on the phone yesterday morning, and it doesn't sound like he has a hall pass to go as far as Vegas, if you catch my drift. maybe while you're helping him with his bike you could also put in a good word to his better half? FB |

Hey Jerry, You should make a side trip to the Area 51 entrance while you're in the area. It's about ~10 miles down a dirt road as I recall. When you get there, the "Camo Dudes" WILL be waiting and watching to see if you cross onto government property. Made the trip a couple of years ago- nothing much to see, it's just kind of cool to be able to say you've been there. Rachel, Nevada (nearest town) is an interesting little place. Hey, maybe Drfuyutsuki can get you in to see the UFO's .... |

Everything you ever wanted to know about the place (well, everything except whether they really have UFO's and alien bodies) can be found here: http://www.dreamlandresort.com/index_en.html Lots of cool photos, including some recent telescopic photos with virtually every building on the base labeled. |
