And that is usually a dangerous thing! OK, here's the deal. I want to stage an actual, not rip off of Reg, BattleTrax event here in Appleton. To pitch the idea to the boss I need your help. As mentioned in the other thread, BTX is an expensive event with little immediate return usually. It is too late to get one planned(at least planned well) for this fall. I am thinking next spring. I have some questions for all of Badweb, your answers will help me sell the idea to the guy whose money I will be spending to run and promote the BattleTrax. Here goes, please copy and paste the questions into your reply and then put your answers next to it. That will make it easy for me to tally and show the level of interest to my boss. There are no wrong answers You will not be graded Questions in no order of importance, just as they come out of my brain. 1. The event will in Appleton WI. Who will come? Please, just yes or no. 2. What month works best for you? 3. Would you be willing to pay an admission fee? 4. How much do you think is fair? 5. Saturday or Sunday? Both? 6. Interest in a BRAG club challenge? 7. Do the "bracket" type or just whoever is fastest? Both? 8. Who would be willing to work their butt off all day, probably in the hot sun for free to help me? 9. How many of you that said you would come will actually participate in the BattleTrax? 10. How many of you would buy a t-shirt or something that day? 11. What kind of prizes?(keep in mind the cost issue) 12. Would a stunt show enhance the event for you? 13. Would you invite and bring others with you that are not on Badweb? 14. Is this too many questions all at once? 15. Who would be willing to hand out flyers at other bike events, shops, etc for me? That's all I can think of right now, there will probably be more. I just want to get a real feel for the level of interest. Too many times dealers have gone thru a lot of work and money to put these events on and had very little turn out. I am not sure why? If I am going to do an event, especially a first for the Appleton dealership and Appleton area I want to know ahead of time who I can count on to be there to help make it great. Hopefully, with your help we can bring BattleTrax back to Wisconsin! |

How much do you think is fair? up to $20 (compare that to a track day rate?) 5. Saturday or Sunday? Both? Saturday 6. Interest in a BRAG club challenge? A team event would be very cool. Iowa vs Racine vs Appleton vs Brew City? 7. Do the "bracket" type or just whoever is fastest? Both? Brackets - Sportbike, Cruiser, Motard/off-road if needed, and open novice. 8. Who would be willing to work their butt off all day, probably in the hot sun for free to help me? I would be lying if I didn't say I wanted to compete, but I would help. 9. How many of you that said you would come will actually participate in the BattleTrax? Definately participate if I am not working it. 10. How many of you would buy a t-shirt or something that day? Probably not, unless they were new cool ones (save this rant for another thread) 11. What kind of prizes?(keep in mind the cost issue) I think I know where we could get some cool tropheys at cost. 12. Would a stunt show enhance the event for you? D-Aces??? Maybe, but I would rather like to concentraite on the Battletrax itself. 13. Would you invite and bring others with you that are not on Badweb? Yes 14. Is this too many questions all at once? No, besides you are the one who has to read ALL the answers! 15. Who would be willing to hand out flyers at other bike events, shops, etc for me? YES - and this is the most vital part in making it a Bike event and not just a Buell event. |

Koz, The bracket thing I am talking about is where you run closest to your picked time based on your practice runs. The closest to their time for the 3 official runs wins. Like bracket racing. Or just have awards for the fastest 3 or 4 times in each bike class. I was already thinking you and your dad could help with the trophies! |

Hi Dave, I am relatively new to this web site, but I have been participating in BTX in the PA series for the past three years. Last year, we had a 10 event series. This year, I am working with our BattleMaster to coordinate the PA events, including York Open House. If you have any questions on cost, return, etc., please feel free to contact me at laura@schaeffershd.com. I will try to help you as best as I can. Laura |

1. The event will in Appleton WI. Who will come? Please, just yes or no. Yes (actually "maybe", but that wasn't an option you gave ) 2. What month works best for you? Dry. 3. Would you be willing to pay an admission fee? Depends. If there are 300 bikes in line I'll just watch. 4. How much do you think is fair? $1-$7.50 5. Saturday or Sunday? Both? Saturday. 6. Interest in a BRAG club challenge? Sure, but I'm not currently a member of one. 7. Do the "bracket" type or just whoever is fastest? Both? Both is more fun, but probably harder to keep track of. It would be nice if one didn't have to pick which option they were after, that way if they got a good lap off they could just forget the bracket time and go for another fast lap, and if they don't get another fast lap then they could just do a slow ride to work on getting their average back in sync, or something like that. 8. Who would be willing to work their butt off all day, probably in the hot sun for free to help me? I'd help for awhile, but sometimes I need to go to the bathroom, and I'll need my butt for the ride home so would rather not work it off if you please. 9. How many of you that said you would come will actually participate in the BattleTrax? If I come, and if there are not 100 bikes in the queue, and if my bike is ready to run, then yes I'll play too. And that's regardless of what I'm on at the time, bagger, antique, pedal bike, Buell, whatever, I ride to ride regardless of what I'm riding. This brings up another question so I'll ask it at the end. 10. How many of you would buy a t-shirt or something that day? I'll probably buy something, maybe parts, or lube, or food. 11. What kind of prizes?(keep in mind the cost issue) How about a gas card that might be co-sponsored by a local station? Just a thought. Or dinner coupons, even just event discounted ones to a local eatery up around there, that way you could share the costs and at the same time spread the word about the event. 12. Would a stunt show enhance the event for you? No. Fun to watch at times on the internet, but not really my thing in person. Unless you get some Trials guy who's good, that would be fun to watch. 13. Would you invite and bring others with you that are not on Badweb? I'd tell a few folks, but being an hour away I'm not sure how many of them would make it up there. And there's someone I know who would probably ride up there but you'd be hard pressed to get them convinced to participate. 14. Is this too many questions all at once? If you have to ask ..... 15. Who would be willing to hand out flyers at other bike events, shops, etc for me? Post them up so we can print them out locally and they'll be handed out or posted locally. 16. One track or two? It's harder to do, but two tracks/courses would be nice. Set one up for bracket runs, set the other one up for best times. Have them sort of side-by-side so spectators can see both at once. And if at all possible make it so those in queue to ride can watch the runs also, gets boring sometimes sitting there cooking my head in the helmet and not being able to watch the other riders up ahead do their runs. 17. Did I type too many words? Yes or no I'm sure that whatever you come up with it will be good. And if you just happen to have a little dirt around nearby maybe you could set up a dirt/pavement course like a TT maybe just to show what the Ulys can do (provided that steering lock limitation doesn't impact those with a little flat track background getting sideways in the soft turns). You did say the first thing you did on the demo Uly was to hop a curb, so you might as well throw a ditch to navigate into the course somewhere. |

I like the idea of a bit of dirt and curb thrown in. But the insurance company would balk at that. BTW: I've been insuring this event for 8 years through a major carrier; never had a claim, but they recently told me that were I to try and start up this event today (rather than 8 years ago) they wouldn't insure it. In the near future I fear we're going to lose a significant amount of risk-exercise events due to lack of available insurance. The key, of course, is to be able to sign your rights away; no where that I'm aware of in this country can you do that. The liability release form etc, is merely due diligence and will not withstand a court challenge. Interestingly, it is not the particpant that causes the problems, but their survivors. Years ago I made a pact with my wife that if I died in a racing/competition incident that she would not bring suit... unless of egregious negligance. The "Target Time" (bracket) BattleTrax is very popular and has significantly reduced the "get-off" average. On the average a motorcycle is dropped about once every 350 laps with a Top Time event. That average rises to over 600 with a Target Time event. The downside to Target Time is that a handful of the very fastest riders don't like it, and spectator interest is less. The big upside is that the emphasis is on skill and consistency, allowing a slower--but competent--rider to win. Generally, our Target Time events are won by 0.02 to 0.03 of a second. And this: I will be staging a BattleTrax at Tomahawk in WI on Sept. 18. Hope to many of you there. Dave, can you make it? We can talk about your event. And for you Left-Coasters, October 8 will see me in Redding, CA at the "Big Bike Weekend" |

No, Jerry. This event is being put on by an independant group with sponsorship from, among others, Redding H-D. http://www.bigbikeweekend.com/ Sorry. it's a "run what YOU brung" event And by-the-by.. the era of providing Buells for the public to ride is rapidly drawing to a close. And understandably so. We've had too many instances wherein the rider (not you, Jerry) figures that destroying someone else's property is a fun thing |

1. The event will in Appleton WI. Who will come? Please, just yes or no. Yes 2. What month works best for you? June, weekend before or after Road America and Homecoming. 3. Would you be willing to pay an admission fee? Yes 4. How much do you think is fair? $5-$15 5. Saturday or Sunday? Both? Both Bracket one day top speed the next 6. Interest in a BRAG club challenge? Yes if I was in BRAG 7. Do the "bracket" type or just whoever is fastest? Both? See end of Question5 8. Who would be willing to work their butt off all day, probably in the hot sun for free to help me? Yes Idea here IMO if there were sessions of bikes not just a mad dash, one group would work the course while one group rides while the next preps their bikes. This is how we do autocrosses that way everybody lends a hand and nobody get the shaft the whole time. 9. How many of you that said you would come will actually participate in the BattleTrax? Yes and I will bring others competitors with me and a cheering section. 10. How many of you would buy a t-shirt or something that day? T-shirts/parts/bumper stickers something or anything with Buell on it. 11. What kind of prizes?(keep in mind the cost issue) Bar end mirrors, tank bags, tail bags, gift certs. T-shirt 12. Would a stunt show enhance the event for you? Yes, could there be some sort of stunt training? with a waiver of course, I'll kill myself on my own time 13. Would you invite and bring others with you that are not on Badweb? Yes 14. Is this too many questions all at once? No 15. Who would be willing to hand out flyers at other bike events, shops, etc for me? Yes but I may be too far away. Great idea by the way. I would like to bring two bikes though, is there any thoughts about that? |

A thought about entry fees... This will cost Dave, and any dealer, several thousand dollars any way you cut it... even without my ridiculous fee. Those of you who have attended these events know that you get a full day's riding. In fact, there are usually several riders that call "Uncle!" It wears you out because it is intensive, and requires focus. BattleTrax has been likened to a continual isometric exercise. The point is, for Appleton's sake I think this event is worth more than a ticket to bad movie. |

Jeez, Mikej! Two tracks would be cool but almost impossible to do based on the area needed, extra help, extra BattleMaster, extra set of timing equipment and so on. Yes, a few too many words but you know I always like your perspective and feedback so I'll let it slide this time. If you help I'll make sure you get a bathroom break. Reg, I don't think I'll make Tomahawk. Would love to get together with you but I will be in Iowa with Kandie. |

We have run dual tracks before. But, as Dave indicates, it's difficult at best. Plus, the real estate requirements are almost impossible to meet. |
