my brother-in-law just had his drive belt replaced on his 03xb9r to the tune of $379.83! this seems excessive to me, 2 1/2 hrs labor!! i can't believe it takes that long, is it that hard to replace a belt on one of these xb's? i would've helped him do it but, he had the bike there for the wheel bearing recall and figured, what the hey, might as well let them do it since they're gonna have the bike apart anyway. yikes!!! |

Welcome to the Grand Ol' Harley tradition of ripping off the customer:-) 2 1/2 hours of labor for changing out a belt is ridiculous, since you are a lot more than half way there when you have the wheel off. My former dealer charged me a half hour to change the belt when I did my wheel bearing upgrade. However, since he had initially told me that the belt would be covered under warranttee, and then changed his mind, I complained to Buell customer service, which then refunded the entire amount, as they are aware that the original model belt did not meet expectations, even though there is no official recall. The Buell customer service number is: 1-414-343-4056 "Expect the best!" By the way, the belt iself is about $140. from Daves at Appleton HD, one of our sponsors. Make sure you are getting the latest one. (Message edited by gentleman_jon on August 19, 2005) |

Took me 1.5 hours to get the belt off the first time. The 03's are a bit tedious with the old style belt guards and all. Might have charged a little much, but not that far off IMHO. |

Daves, you guys are pretty low for labor rates, especially considering your proximity to Milwaukee, which the average rate here I belive is anywhere from $65 an hour at Hals to $73 an hour at House of Harley. |

I think we are going up to 65.00 per hour soon. So the dealer charged your BIL 10.00 extra for the belt? |

My local shop rates are 104.00 an hour. its insane, I wish there was just a buell dealership. The wait time to get the bike in sucks. Its costing me 650 bucks (including parts) to have the rear valves replaced after they smacked the piston. Extended warrenty wouldnt cover it. Said it was over rev (which it probably was) and not mechanicle failure. I still think it happened when going from first to second gear. Second never engaged and I tached it out. -Viper |

hmm, no rev limiter? but yeah, $10 extra dollars for the belt, what the.. so, i printed this thread for him and told him to call buell - granted, he bought the bike used and not from this dealer, so i imagine a full retail thing would be in order however, that's a spankin a little more than full retail, not to mention they had the bike apart anyway! from now on i've strongly suggested he work on the bike himself (i'll help) he really needs to buy a service manual (i've been telling him for weeks!). hopefully he can recoup a little money, even a store credit, when he dropped the bike off he ordered $300 worth of parts! (he bought it with no passenger set-up ie pegs, mounts hardware etc.) maybe all those parts were +$10 too! hope not, i'm also hoping the belt they put on was the upgraded jobbie, maybe that's the price difference!?! |

They can fly past the rev limiter. My S3 has seen 7,500 RPM on an occasional missed shift. |

Daves is awesome. Too bad the dealer where I bought my bike wasn't named Appleton H-D/Buell. Wait, it was. Just the wrong Appleton H-D/Buell. Go south from Daves by about 8-10 hours and you'll end up in Clarksville,TN where there is another Appleton H-D. I almost got to go visit Dave next week if my boss would quit hogging all the trip time. We have a corporate plant in Milw. and another plant in Jefferson, and they need some technical support. Dang I wanted to go to Dave's. |

It took me 30 minutes to change my rear belt....... I am not a "technician" but it came out fine. Some people need to get over being afraid to turn a wrench on the simple stuff....... |

Depends on the bike. Changing the belt on my 9SX would be trivial. Changing the belt on my M2 was one of the few jobs that scared me. |

Looked into having my rear tire changed. The stealership wanted about $68. Called another non Buell dealership and they want only $34 (plus the where the only ones that had the tire on hand. You can do the math. |

Shop rates by me in NY range from $79-$90 per hr. Then they tack on about 100% markup on all parts. But the worst part the techs hate to work on Buells and have openly called then them "pieces of " and the saleman say we only sell Buells cause they make us. That must be great for business |

I wish I ran a HD/Buell dealership. If I ever heard one of my employees talking down our products like that, especially infront of a customer, they would be out the door before the customer even had a chance to complain. Such a lack of professionalism is intolarable. |

Peter(AKA Medic_2512): Those are Harley-Davidson Technicians(definatly not MASTER MECHANICS) ... Remember this: "ONE OF THE MOST DANGEROUS THINGS IN THE WORLD IS A HARLEY-DAVIDSON TECHNICIAN WORKING ON A BUELL !!!" THIS IS NOT A BUELL DEALER, "I" would not ever buy a BIG TWIN/Sportster from them !!! In BUELLing LaFayette |
