crombie, did you weigh a wheel assy, versus the cast unit, i would be interested in the comparison and the cost to duplicate. i am quite interested! maybe in just buying the hubs and having the wheels made here somewhere??? (Message edited by sleez on August 19, 2005) |

"did you weigh a wheel assy, versus the cast unit" That's apples and oranges. What's the weight difference with the tube and rim liner in place? What would the weight diff be if the spokes and hub were built to the same rigidity as cast (1/4" spokes?)? Extra tire carcass temperature due to tube? Interesting little "wiggle" as the tire shifts sideways on the tube during cornering? About 2X as many flat tires? Have fun truing the rim after a few hard starts!! Your choice... I'm looking for some drum brakes, point & coil ignition and friction shocks, because they look "different". |

crombie: you've done it now... it looks like everyone (including me) wants to see more photos and more information on those spokes. |

Hey Panic The drum brake sounds cool! The points would work well also since most don't rev about 6 grand anyway! As for the wheels they are little lighter than the stock wheels. When I work out all the little design flaws I will post about how much a set would cost, and where to go! |

I didn't think I would like the spokes, but they look kind of cool..... personally, I like my regular non spoke wheels...too hard to keep the spokes clean...looks different and good...thanks for posting.....REX |

what might be cool, would be to get some of the old style, 60's huge dual drum brakes, etc. like used to be on some of the old honda and Yamaha road racers....REX |

The weight discussion was done 30 years ago (Kimtab, etc.). The mag weighed slightly more, but the total weight was less because they can run tubeless - it's that close. If you've ever tried to re-true a tweaked alloy rim (Guzzi 850) you know why I won't do it again. Those also appear to be 90 degree heads on the spokes - guess what shape the head is when 900 ft/lb of torque (1st gear overall ratio) is applied? Yes, the head angle bends out, the spoke elongates and loosens. When the wheel relaxes the spoke more-or-less resumes it's original shape (like a con rod), but it only does this so many million times before it's either permanently deformed or broken. The small "cotton spool" flange is lightest, easiest to design spokes for and assemble but the wheel is far less rigid than a drum with spokes laced to the OD. A spool hub has the spokes almost radial (despite the cross pattern), which offers only minimal resistance to rotation. BTW: comparisons were done between mag and wire on the same car (without telling the driver) in the 1950s, and the extra flex of wires resulted in dangerous oversteer if only used in the rear. Moss used wheel choice as a tuning method on some tracks. The ride comfort was better - because the wires "squashed" on stiff bumps. |

Lest I be mistaken for a style bigot, I have 120/90-19 tires on spoked WM4 alloy rims, front brake is 200mm twin leading shoe, on my ancient street bike (1934 chassis, big twin flathead motor). |

I like wire spoked wheels. Don't like the maintenance required to keep them shiny though, on account of I'm lazy. So I appreciate and enjoy them on other peoples' bikes. |

"The weight discussion was done 30 years ago (Kimtab, etc.)." Now there's a reference that stirred up some dormant brain cells. I remember those old Kimtab cast wheels and disc brakes on Rokons back in the early 70's. They really looked odd back then when cast wheels and front and rear disc brakes weren't common even for streetbikes.
