replaced primary chain adjuster for embiggened version...good thing too, I fished out a 1/8 inch chunk of plastic, and there was a crack starting in the metal!! Anyhow, got it all back together, and by what I could gather the consensus was between 24-28 oz of oil, so I went with 26oz. and am now wondering about the new noise I hear. It's sounds just like a metal chain dragging on plastic, is this symptomatic of a new adjuster (ie, no grooves worn in yet thus it makes a little extra racket) or might it be a little dry in there? Or perhaps adjusting it to spec is too much/little (ala belt tension factory specs)? Thanks in advance! | ||

Factory specs for the tensioner are dead on and important. The chain can stretch though, did you measure it at a couple different places? Try re-adjusting. It might be settling in, you might have gotten unlucky and chosen several "tight spots", or you might have just had a brain cramp when you were doing something (been there... done that). | ||

Yeah. The chain wears into the plastic fast at first until the rollers touch down. You probably just need to tweak it a bit more tight. | ||

I replaced my broken tensioner a couple weeks ago. The new one whined especially when the engine decellerated and downshifting. It took a few weeks and 500 miles to quiet down and now sometimes when I upshift it sounds like the primary chain may be slapping around. I assume it wore groves and loosened up a little and needs adjustment. I set mine for 1/2 inch of play on the tight spot. I intend to change the oil again, maybe I am paranoid but I would like to get the worn plastic out of the tranny oil. Den | ||

... embiggened ... If that's not a word, it should be. I like it! Reminds me of a time a friend of mine forgot the word for cell division during a lecture and used the word "splitation" instead of mitosis. It got a roar of approval from the intelligensia. | ||

Reep: replaced a leaky primary gasket, the tensioner was the up dated type, the shoe had some 1/4" slots worn in it, set the tension to "about" the 1/2" mark at the "tight spot" ( like the critical "at about" nature of the adjustment )[ swiss movement - brick ] tried to place chain back in the original slots in the shoe the chain whines on decel any thoughts? While you're on the subject reep, do I need to pull the primary cover to replace a leaky shifter seal? Can I use a tool/dental pick to get it out? Thanks..Den | ||
