Made a major mod to my XB9R today. Seems that my Buell logo plate (right side timing cover) vibrated it's way right thru the pop rivets and hit the road spinning. Got a new one and popped off the cover (two Philips head screws) cut threads into the stock holes and added two black machine screws with blue loc-tite. They were the same screws that came off my insurance company designed belt guard. Came out quite nice and the way I figure it added at least ten horsepower......... | ||

Nice mod but if you really want to add the horses you have to use the high performance locktite and polish the screw heads to reduce wind drag...... | ||

No no man, you shoulda went with the YELLOW high performance machine screws... they're each worth AT LEAST 2.5 hp.. you'd have been up to 15 horses... if only you'd have gone with the yellow ones..  (Message edited by frausty12r on August 14, 2005) | ||

No no no. I can't believe you guys haven't seen the other threads about this. Where Sky went wrong is he should have replaced the cover with a titanium cover. THATS worth 10 horses. The machine screw/high perf loctite combo is only good for 2 at best. This is dyno proven. | ||

I heard somewhere that there are new "Drummer" high performance screws....... Guess I shoulda used those but with all the exhaust controvery I decided to go with the factory ones  | ||

ok on a serious note, lol. mine is about to come flying off and was wondering where the 2 philips screws u were talking about were. all i see are the big allens all the way around the timing cover. need to remount it somehow before i loose it | ||

There are two philips screw under the piece about to fly off. Remove those, tap the holes where the pop rivets are and add some nice allens with a dab of loctite. My pop rivets were so loose they would not drill out I had to wait for it to fly off. Bought another one for seven dollars at the dealer. | ||

On the other hand................... One might think about refinishing the stock timing cover to match the engine cases, say , black wrinkle, and attach with low drag chrome plated button head 10/32 allen screws. Just a suggestion:-)  | ||

Or you can make something really cool... Here is a trick. Instead of taping the backing plate. Drill it out and epoxy a set of nuts on the back. Buy a set of stainless screws and use a little blue locktite when attaching your new timing cover plate.  | ||

I went to the local marine parts shop, got some stainless machine screws and just replaced the pop rivets, no threadlocker used and it works just fine as is for 10K+ miles on my Buells. Those are some good ideas. | ||

"..pop rivets were so loose they would not drill out..." When that happens, hold the drill motor at a slight angle to the rivet head (10-15 degrees or so) and run the drill at hight speed with light pressure. It will eventually chip the material away and the rivet head will fall off. Jack | ||

ok thanks, didn't know if the center was removable like other bikes since i couldn't see. the vibrating is driving me nuts. sounds awful, lol |
