I've got one blister after 2 years ... its in an inconspic place so I've been ignoring it as the rest of the paint is beautiful. Its getting bigger though. Any hints on stopping the spread? I'm tempted to just cut away the blister and leave the well adhered paint. Its not something that I would see ... unless it keeps getting bigger. | ||

I tried that on my scoot's tank, but the weather got up underneath the now-exposed paint edge, with predicable (i.e., not happy) results sorry, bud, wish I had better news -- prhaps someone else will? | ||

Hm, I wonder if some kind of sealant around the cut edge would have helped? rt | ||

I did a fair amount of research on this in some automotive painting forums and thought I would post my findings just in case anyone might find it useful some day. These are my opinions on what happened, why it happened, and how to fix it based on my research. Time will tell. 1 - The blister happened at the bottom edge of the tank, right by the underside. Close inspection showed a drip right there on the underside of the tank. Blisters are caused by solvents that cannot escape thought the paint film. That drip that was not even visible had alot of solvents in it. I also waxed it way too early which trapped the solvents. 2 - Repair. Cut and sand back the blister until every thing you have is stable and stuck! 3 - Repaint the area and overlap. Primer is porous any primer exposed by sanding will sponge up moisture from the air which will travel under currently healthy paint. This will cause new blisters. Keep the repair paint film thin so the solvents from the repair can escape and for gods sake don't wax it for 3 months. Mine is located where I could repair it and it won't be noticiable. This will hopefully get me quite a few more years out of a pretty expensive custom paint job on my tank. |
