I trailered the bike to Sturgis (yea I've got the T shirt) and then will ride it to Riding the Rockies next week and need some suggestions on strange behavior by the 2003 XB9S the last 2 mornings. Starting the bike each morning has barely started to turn it over and reset the clock. It appears the battery voltage is low (starter relay clicking) but after running it will start every time. It is only after sitting overnight that it has a hard time turning over. Battery? Starter relay? Stator? Chipmunk? Connections are tight on the terminals and nothing looks amiss in the wiring. Battery is original in an Oct '02 build date. I can probably pick up a battery at Sturgis or wait until I get to Rocky Mtn HD/Buell in Littleton, Co. Any ideas? DBird |

DBird, It is definatly the chipmunk. Have you been feeding it reguarly? They tend to get thirsty and will sometimes go after the water in the battery, usually rendering the battery useless. In any case you need a new battery. Wait at your own risk. |

Same thing I am going threw also. I changed the battery on Tuesday. So far It has not happened again. I will ride it to work every day and see what happens in the next week. I am not going to put it on the charger at night and see if it starts to happen again. What Is involved with changing the stator in parts and labor at a dealer? |

Will a HD only dealer have a battery? Is it the same as a Sportster? |

"Will a HD only dealer have a battery?" I got battery at Wal-Mart earlier this year to replace the 5 year old battery on my M2. They had a application look up thing with a LCD display and it included Buells. I got a EverLast ES20L-BS (about $80? too much I thought at the time). But it was sized right and dropped right into place. The terminals used spacers (supplied with battery) to get the cable approaches right. So far, so good with it. Jack |

Thanks Craig! That's the kind of info I was looking for. Isn't Badweb great? Going to go ride now, DBird |

Got the new battery (thanks again to Craig for the number) installed. The old battery read 12.5 volts and would dip to 7 volts while cranking the engine. The new battery reads 12.6 volts but only dips to 10 volts during cranking. With the engine running it is at 14.X volts, so my stator & regulator are working. Obviously on the old battery there's a bad cell in there. Would continuing to use a bad battery damage the stator? (I put in the new battery) I figure that the capacity to crank has to come from somewhre in the system and if the battery can't supply it the stator will see the peak load. I hope this isn't to technical for Tramp! DBird (added charge voltage) (Message edited by dbird29 on August 13, 2005) |

YTX-14 BS. look in yellow pages under "auto electric" there you should find a local business specializing in starter alternator and battery sales and service, someone therer can likely assist you. dean |

I rode the 98 S1W Sat, Sun and Mon without problem... When I went to ride this Thurs nite, I turned the key switch and nothing... no lights or dash indicators... I was able to jump it and it ran fine when still connected to the jumper cables... Once the cables were removed, it ran but when I opened the throttle the tach went to zero... I shut her down and back to no lights or dash indicators... The battery did take an overnite charge, but I have yet to test it... I am hoping the battery has a bad cell and I all I need is a new battery... Anyone else experience this?? |

Dbird- You know I had EXACTLY the same problems you are experiencing, got worse over time till it would not start. Thought it would be the things you mentioned..... Ended up after much cursing and help from an airplane electronics technician friend, to be the internals of the starter button switch that needed a good clean out to remove corrosion. Works fine now |

Well, my battery took a charge... starter componets worked fine, the battery charged with the motor running... have not yet tested the stator or regulator, but..... I went for an almost 400 mile ride today... Me thinks I didn't turn the ignition (flat key style) ALL the way off last time I put her up....Duh..... |

Once your clock starts reseting during an attempted start then you really know things are getting bad, the voltage needed for the clock to remember the time needs to get real low for the clock to reset. |

Opto, Any opinions on what to check? I installed the new battery over a week ago and so far so good. (Message edited by RKC00 on August 17, 2005) |

If you have a fairly good VOM (can measure to 10ths of a Volt) try measuring the voltage across the battery terminals when you get back from a ride. If the battery is fully charged it will read around 12.6-12.8 Volts or so. Do that again a few hours later. If that voltage has dropped more than .2 or .3 Volts, you have either something using the battery or a battery that is not holding a charge. You can follow up on the first check by again getting the battery fully charged (ride it or use .5 Amp or 1 Amp trickle charger overnight). Once it is back up to the 12.6-12.8V range, disconnect the battery terminals from the bike's system. Check it again in a few hours or the next day. If it has fallen again, the battery is not holding a charge and replacement is in order. With your bike running at idle, the battery voltage will come up to 13.5 Volts or higher, that reflects the charging voltage from the alternator. I defer to Reepicheep or any other true electrical expert on what I have said here. The Buell service manuals have a good table in them for estimating the battery charge state and for estimating the time needed to recharge them at typical charging voltages. If a battery charges too slowly if tells you something about the condition of the battery. On a battery the size of the typical Buell battery, 10 Amps is a pretty aggressive charging rate, I would not use it for more than an hour and then I would keep an eye on the battery and stop if it got warm or made any noises at all. I recommend 1 Amp or less chargers if you want to use if for overnight charging and off season battery conditioning. Look for a .5 Amp to 1 Amp model with a cutoff at full charge. $20 should get you a good one. Jack |
