I have been given the mission to help my Dad find a copy of a year book from boot camp (or something like that). Anyone have an idea of where I can start looking? Any tips or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

"The Historical Society Gift Shop provides much needed financial support through the sale of memorabilia, Platoon Graduation Photos, and Year Books."

I bet the year books are cataloged somewhere...

Sweet...Thanks for the link.

Edit: Hmmm...From the site it looks like I can get platoon photos but they don't have yearbooks back from 67. I'll give them a call tomorrow maybe they can help me on my mission.

I have a photo of my yearbook and all the info in it if you need it.

The key would be to find someone in the unit who, like I, foolishly bought 3 or 4 copies to memorialize their military "career".

If you can't find one, I'll make you a hell of a deal on one for MCRD/SD Platoon 3014 featuring Squad Leader Canfield.

: )

This is what I have for information right now. What other information do you think I will need?

Platoon #2214

Platoon Commander: Gunny Sgt. McCarthy
Drill Inst: Staff Sgt. Pope and Sgt. Smith
BootCamp:SanDiego
Started: Nov 17 1967.
Graduated: Feb(ish) 1968 as Honor Man of Platoon#2214

So I don't have a whole lot of info. Dad doesn't exactly remember everything. He claims it comes from when Sgt. Smith took his M14 from him and hit him with it when he got out of step on the parade ground.

So I would be looking for a year book from 1968? or 1967?

I really do appreciate your help with this.

astounding sight Signguy. Very moving, not only for what it signifies but it's location and surrounding scenery. Post here when you plan on going as I would make the trip from N.Y. in a heartbeat.

Semper Fi.

I still want to go see the Vietnam memorial in DC. The rolling thunder riders came through last year. I so wanted to just call into work for a couple of weeks and ride with all those people up to DC. Seems like it would be a real experience to ride up there and see it.

John is speaking of the Sunset Parade. Performed by the Silent Drill Team. Not sure if it still performed in the Commandants backyard but last time I was there it was held there. Most likely still there as I dont think tradition would be broken. Another spectacle to make you proud to be a Jarhead. As for the Vietnam memorial... accompanied my father there about 5 yrs ago.. he went to say goodbye to his best friend.. his first time dealing with the war since he left.. gut wrenching experience. Didnt see a dry eye there in the week I spent. Changing of the guard at the Tomb of the unknowns is also a must.
