I have a problem with my carb. I have the pro series air cleaner and twice my carb has come loose and junked the rubber boot/gasket between the manifold and carb. It seems that the boot is the only thing holding my carb in place. Is this mounted incorrectly? The stock air cleaner has the solid mount in front, but that is for a much bigger air box. Anybody run into this? Any solutions? I'm thinking the breather bolts could help mount the back plate of the air cleaner. Thanks Chris | ||

You are missing the bracket that holds the carb in place. You correctly surmised that the breather bolts could be used for this, that's exactly how the bracket is held on. Don't ride the bike without the carb bracket. | ||

The race kit for my M2 did not come with an additional bracket for the backplate on the aircleaner that mounts through the breathers. It came with 90 degree fittings for the breather that connect to a short piece of tubing that pokes in through the mounting plate. The carb itself is only held in by the rubber seal on the intake manifold. It takes a good amount of pressure to seat the carb into the manifold. I twist the carb slightly clockwise and counter-clockwise until it becomes fully seated. I check to see if it is seated by looking behind the backplate with a small flashlight. If I can see the groove at the base of the carb outlet where the carb inserts into the manifold then the carb needs to be seated further. If I cannot see the groove then the carb is good. Make sure it is seated all the way around. I have been running my bike like this for years without any problems. Make sure you change that seal every couple of years. If all that checks out, maybe you have an excessive vibration problem. Have you checked all your isolators? | ||

Perhaps I'm unfamiliar with the Pro-series air filter, but I was under the impression you still had to run the stock carb bracket with it.  I still had to use this bracket with my Forcewinder. | ||

The Pro Series CF air cleaner still uses the above hold down bracket. The assembly sequence is: Carb boot-carb-gasket-hold down bracket-gasket-extender ring-gasket-filter backing plate-velocity ring. Running without the hold down bracket will cause problems. Brad | ||

interesting, i'll have to check the instruction sheet that came with the kit, it's unlike me to miss a step like that... i've still been running the bike without the bracket for over 3 years... | ||

I got a forcewinder for my X1 and the instructions said to throw the steel bracket away. Sometimes I wonder how many people had their $300 aluminum snorkel fall off. | ||

The instructions with mine did not indicate that the bracket was to be removed or used, an e-mail to FMP got a quick answer, ( they wanted to sell me the billet trinket ) Ps if you run banjo bolts get a gasket kit for them you will need 6 pieces, I omited this ( i was having some of my stupid minutes for that day ) | ||

Thanks for all of the help guys. I have the old bracket, just need to get some new gaskets and it looks like it will bolt right up. My girlfriend always asks why I save everything. I'm glad I saved that bracket. I also found the instructions for the race kit, it definitely says not to use the bracket. -Chris | ||

Got it mounted up. Bike is running so good. Must have had a small air leak for a while now. Another thing, throttle response is a little crisper now that the carb is solid mounted. Just holding it in place with the rubber boot must have allowed a little flex as you pulled on the throttle. Thanks for all of the help. -Chris |
