i got my race kit in today. I have a 2004 xb12s. the muffler shown on the website is polished. the muffler i got with the kit is silver like the 984 muffler. i have seen a few 1200s with this muffler and was wondering if its a 9 muffler or if people have coated a 12 muffler. i also got the ECM that says "for race use only". i slightly remember that the ones that have that on them are more rare or something. Is my kit different? if it is a 9 muffler will it work. i don't care that its silver just want to make sure it works. i bought it from bumpus in murphesboro(sp?) and he got it through sport twin. i am scheduled to get it on, on saturday. i hope that its different than most race kits or if it is a 9 muffler then it will work the same. oh and the filter that it came with is a K&N not a pro series. not that i care but i thought maybe this helps since i got it through sport twin and may show it is a pieced togethor kit (Message edited by buellblastrider on July 27, 2005) |

its the soonest i can get it on. its under warranty and i don't feel confident and its the first day ii'm off of work. i just need to know if it will work. if its a 9 muffler it won't fit the headers will it? isn't the 12 headers bigger? |

The race ECM says "Race Only". Yeah right and i believe the muffler size is different for a 9 and a 12 but both come in the 2 different finishes. I'd say that if it says its for a 12 its for a 12. So if it doesnt fit its a 9. The K&N is the race filter as well. If I'm wrong on any of this, someone please correct me. Enjoy the kit |

Hmmm, As far as I know they are both the same.. I sold my xb12r race can to a guy who has a xb9r and it fits GooD ,I also had other so called 9 cans on my 12 no plms. Put it on yourself, No biggie, If ya can that is, you will need just a few simple tools |

The only component of the race kit that differs is the ECM. Exhaust inlet will be the same cause the header converge into the same size pipe. |

the 12 race can is slightly longer than a 9 race can i believe. if the can hits the pulley when you put it on, then its for a 9. I know people who have put a 9 can on a 12. You just have to put some spacers between the can and the bracket in back or bend the outlet on the right side to clear the pulley. someone correct me if i am wrong. |

1. Mufflers are the same on both 9+12. This is a bit of a problem for the 12, because the stock muffler is an "active" muffler: has a valve that helps low end torque. 2. The Pro series air filter IS a K&N 3. They are only kidding when they stamp "race only " on the ECM.This is to prevent the Govmnt from thinking anyone is going to have any fun on the public thoroughfares. 4. Make sure that you have your TPS,( throttle position sensor), reset at a Buell dealership that knows how to do it. What most guys do is install the air cleaner and muffler, (the bike will run just fine that way), then drive down to the dealers, and install the ECM in the parking lot. Takes about 5 minutes. Most bikes run poorly without a TPS reset, some don't run at all,(mine), and none run properly. Probably a good idea to make an appointment with the dealer, charge should be about 1/2 hour labor. 5. You also want to remove the "snorkle" . That is a black rubber tube that runs inside the air intake that goes through the left side of the frame. This opens up the air intake for proper running. Enjoy it: makes the bike quite a bit more fun. |

Actually the 9 Race muffler and 12 race muffler , are differant in length. We have seen that before here on this board where the 9 muffler would not fit on the 12, although I believe the 12 muffler will fit on a 9. Also the Pro series air filter no longer is using K&N as the vendor, it now looks very similar to the stock air filter. |

A good rule... if you don't know for certain, then please don't tell the entire board your opinion as if it is fact. A good preface would be... "I don't know for sure, but I think that..." Deal? I'll start... I don't know for sure, but I thought that the two race mufflers were different. Looks like I was wrong. Let's look on the Buell site to confirm... Not much help... They show the polished muffler with the XB12 race kit, but the other apparently will fit all XB's except the new Ulysses. |

I don't know for sure, but I think that the race mufflers are now the same. I thought the different lengths were related to the year of the bike, and the associated pulley size, not to whether it is a 9 or a 12. I do KNOW from personal experience that the the original 9 race mufflers were longer and will not fit newer bikes with the larger pulleys. |

Garp I know you had a used 9 race can that would not fit on your 12. Do you know what year of bike that came off of? Maybe your right the newer ones might be universal and the original race can that came out on the 9 was longer. |

ok thanks for the help guys. i guess i will find out saturday. btw tony at bumpus HD in the sales rides a buell and is great. shipped it to me in one day and was very nice. hes in the part dept. one reason i don't do it myself is because i am afraid that if something happened to my bike the dealer would refuse to ask about it as warranty work because i put the kit on myself. with buells i can easily see them saying "well if you wouldn't have done it yourself and let us do it then we could cover it". black wolf creek in VA didn't even replace the primary gasket on my blast as warranty work although they claimed they did. btw i know the "for race use only" is just to save their hides but i thought that i read somewhere that there was 2 different types of ecms that worked on the bikes. the one for race use only wasn't as common and more desireable for whatever reason. maybe it was just a dream. Anyway thanks for the help i will let you all know but pray that it will work because i am leaving sunday morning on a trip with the xb and I REALLY want the kit on before i leave. stock is to boring for me. my blast had vance & hines and is sad to say sounded much better than my XB at the moment |

the only question i have now is why don't these bikes come like this already. i love that exhaust it sounds so mean, worth every penny. it woke the bike up. i haven't tested it enough to find out how exactly but i love it. |
