2000 x1, just got back from a 1700 trip and changed the oil. went out to take the bike to work a couple days later (hands hurt a bit) and during my pre ride check routine I noticed pulling the front and stepping on the back break that light wasn't working. kept going through and noticed the horn is very weak. also bike won't start in neutral without clutch engaged and when in neutral if I put the sidestand down it dies automatically. Pretty sure this prob is the sidestand switch, have searched the KB's and found a lot of pertinent info and schematics about the sidestand bypass but what I would really like is a simple picture of sidestand switch and wires and maybe a pointer on what to clip and splice... kind of paranoid about hurting my bike!! the no break light is going to keep me from riding as I have checked the fuses and bulb and so far have done a simple retracing of wires to no avail... if anyone has any suggestions other than check the knowledge vault that would be great!! Jake

sorry this is so long!!

The side stand switch is easy. Just cut the two wires wherever you like and splice them together. I did it right after the plug so If by chance I decided I wanted to put a new one on, the original plug would stil be entact.

The bike is designed not to start unless the clutch is engaged. I took that switch off also and spliced the wires.

The weak horn may indicate a battery that is ready to die, but the tail light not working is seperate. I would check your bulb first then work your way back through the wiring. I am guessing it is just the bulb though. If you had a short, you would probably be blowing fuses (trust me I know!).

thanks for the quick response koz, I have the day off tomorrow so I am going to really look into all of it. I checked the tail bulb earlier and it seemed alright, the tail light still lights up just the brake aspect isn't working, both filaments seem intact but maybe I will need to do a closer inspection. anyway thanks for the advise! My S-1 has recently started blowing a fuse; the directional/tail light/ speedo face light power source fuse...thing. I haven't a clue why mine does this but from what I am going through, you might want to look closely as what else is effected and than go from there.

I had a problem where a quick discont (6 pin trailer harness I installed) was faulty and caused the fuse to blow every time I used my right turn signal. I would loose my signals, tail light, and speedo.

I would test the connection first and then work my way forward. My first gues is that it is the socket (assuming the bulb is good). It doesn't seem like a switch since either the foot nor the hand brake are cause the light to work. I am still 90% sure it is not a short since you would most likely blow a fuse if that were the problem. The next thing I would look for would be a pinched wire under the seat.

Good luck. Take your time and I would work from the back to the front stabing the wire every till your tester lights up hot.

put in a new bulb, fixed problem. simple stuff first... the funny thing is that the old bulb seems perfectly fine neither filament is burned out, maybe just a connection issue?? thanks for the advise guys! Jake

i laughed to when i pulled the original bulb to look at it then put it back in backwardsish (if that makes since) and noticed no tail light so I pulled the front brake and low and behold it lit up.... terminals looked a little worn but nothing to bad, oh well just glad it was simple!!! jake
