Forgive my stupidity.... But is there a clamp or something that holds the carb onto the manifold? I've got a new intake manifold and a new carb for my X1.

Yes, there is a bracket that bolts on the breather holes.
It goes out over the mouth of the carb.

Here's a picture I stole from another posting.
Note the bolts in the breather holes.
Don't try this unless you have the XB rocker covers with the PCV valve on the top.

Maybe I misunderstood the question, but there is a bracket that holds the backing plate and velocity stack on which has holes for the breather tubes, but the carb itself just presses into the manifold seal and is held there with friction.

Just make sure you press the carb all the way in, there is a ridge (indentation) on the exterior of the carb throat (my CV at least) that is no longer visible when the carb is fully seated. It actually takes a fair amount of pressure to get it right. I always check it with a flashlight when I am done.

Of course I have an M2 with an aftermarket race kit. I am assuming that you did not convert your X1 to a carb and use a stock airbox...

Thanks guys. I had thought I would need that bracket. Plus that will keep the pressed on adaptor for the Mukuni.

Hope that my breather setup from the Force Winder (fuel inj) will still fit.

the local HD stealer tells me the part is obsolete.. does anybody have the part number so I can try it that way? Don't want to wait for mail order.

Ryker, I reused the original bracket from my fuel injection when I converted to a carb (CV). Had to elongate the holes a LITTLE bit on the breather/head mount holes to get everything to line up the way I wanted it too. Ran the breathers into a homemade catch can. Questions, let me know. The HSR42 Mikuni fits awful close to the fins when it's located home correctly. Basically it only just squeezes in with millimeters to spare.

It is important to get the bracket and washers in the correct order too otherwise the bracket will not squeeze the carb on tight and correct.

It's a simple enough task providing you have the correct parts. If memory serves the stock S1W bracket (don't know part number) marries up perfectly to the HSR42 using the rubber type adapter therefore should work correct when converting an X1 to carb.

I always wondered if an X1 would perform better with a properly tuned carb over FI with the race ECM.

I think I read somewhere that the real reason for the fuel injection was for drivability. The article said that the cams have too much overlap for a normal idle.
My friend's M2 with a V&H pipe goes pretty well. You can't really tell the difference until the top end.

DJ, my 00 X-1 runs MUCH better with the CV-44 carb and other motor work I have done to it. I like to tune my bike for the moment, and the FI just didn't give me that flexability with out spending tons of cash on extra stuff.

Just a silly question from a very satisified FI Buell owner, (99 XI, 2001 XI, 2002 S3, 2002 XiW) What manufacturer of automobiles use a carb?
Add the Race ECM, set the TPS and go ride.

Hotrodsportster, Unfortunately some of us have dealers who have "buell techs" who cannot even properly reset the TPS. After an hour of waiting, The service manager came out and brought me back to the "tech" who explained to me that he could not get the TPS reset and that he had two more bikes in the shop that were doing the exact same thing. He then told me that he had them torn apart and couldn't figure it out! Believe it or not, he also told me that the mounting holes in the TPS itself were slotted for manual adjustment and that if I wanted pay the labor to remove the airbox, he would attempt to "adjust" the TPS manually. I was so dumbfounded with his ignorance of DDFI, I took my keys and left.I had three choices at that point(this was before the software to allow me to do it myself was out). I could truck the bike to another state. Not gonna happen. I could purchase the scanalyzer myself (Harley would not sell me the Buell software), Or convert to something that I didn't have to rely on an inept dealer to diagnose and/or repair. No offense, But I wanted to ride, and a carb was the only way it was gonna happen. I do, however, agree that fuel injection is superior. When it works correctly. I do plan on purchasing the software from American Sport Bike, and converting back to DDFI when I'm done having fun fiddling with my carb

X1 thanks for the picture. I guess the previous owner forgot to put the orginal bracket on the bike. But I did notice that on my 2002 model bike on the bottom of the intake is a set up that allows the AFV to be secured against the intake manifol. I guess different years... maybe.


Hotrodsportster--- why a carb over the Buell Fuel injection.
1 Buell techs are few and far between. And since this system is for only 1999-2002. It WILL GET WORSE.
2 I don't want to chase TPS, AFV, ET, AT, CPS, and all the wires. Just the cost and hassle of chasing them down is worth the cost of a carb.
3 Take a peak at my profile and you'll see that a simple race ECM is no good.
4 Comparing the simple Buell fuel injection to a modern car is like comparing apples and grapes. Had Buell uses a copy of a GM OBDII program that can be edited... then that would be great.
5 Mukuni and the CV carbs are massed produced and lots of great info on them. Much simpler to tune. Much cheaper to tune. Less than 30.00 in jets to tune a carb. Where as the FI requires an 200+ powercommander, laptop, and lots of tuning. Carb wins.
6 So by trying to ask what cars use a carb.... Well just how many cars are air cooled? How many bikes are air cooled? By your thoughts we should trade our v-twin for an new Honda sportbike each and every year.

new is not always better. Whats proven to work is what I want.
