MikeJ and all -- Mike's comment got my wheels spinnin, and I've done some research -- there's a joint that will plastic-chrome a tuber tank for about $400, extra hunnert for black -- due to the fact that the dears bubble often and vigorously, they'd need the tank for approx 8 weeks (for serious high strength gris-gris, one assumes) while a black chrome tanks that never bubbles might very well be worth 4/5 bills, they ain't sure it WOULDN'T bubble if the outgassing continued (and I have no faith that it wouldn't), and, although they havn't said so, my guess is that they'd be reluctant to warrantee the work (they've never done a Buell tank, so their lack of data would make them skittish, and reasonably so, I'm guessing) so, I'm ponderin spending that much on a "paint" job . . . .I may try to talk em in to a discount as this is R&D, but won't press the issue -- |

(Somehow I'm thinkin' if this doesn't work I'm going to owe Bomber a nice bottle of scots whiskey, or scotch, or sumthin' like that.) I do have a spare bubbled pre-tyco logo wide mantaray tanks, one in white, one in black, one of which might be available for said chromeing experimentation. Just say the word and we'll work out the item transfer details. |

chuckle -- I'm composing my suggested course of action to the vendor as we speak, sprinkled with smile, grins, and guffaws so they don't think poorly of the Buell community -- I, too, have a good R&D candidate, Mike -- I'll elt ya know how it goes btw, the joyint is Classic Componants - they advertise in Cycle Wolrd |

Hey fellers, I am in the middle of changing the look of my thunderbolt. Court was VERY helpful with some info from the factory. First, I am not changing the base color, I am using color shifting crystals from old school flake. Then I am doing some painting and airbrushing over that. One of the things that helped a lot was the suggestion NOT to use sand paper, but to use gray scotch brite. It wont leave deep scratches in the plastic. It worked like a charm. Thanks again court. Also, I have bought some things from Al at sport twin, and he has been a top notch guy. I HIGHLY recommend giving him a call for Buell info, and parts. Thanks again for all your help. |

I can understand the scotch brite thing, but how the hell do you get it to stick? I guess you probably didn't have to worry about it since your not changing the base color. How it all started for me was through the tank vent. I took the tank off for rocker gaskets-the metal ones work much better and are reuseable-wahoo, and put the tank on the work bench. Gas leaked out the vent and down the front and peeled the color off, but not the white base coat. Why I don't know. I sanded all the orange off, and put primer down which lasted for a good year until I laid it down and then I had to fill scratches so I took it down to plastic, added filler, adhesion promoter, primered, sanded to 400g first color, wet sand, second color, wet sand, clear. Now I have a bad bubbling but only on the right side, just happens to be the area that would be exposed to vapor all the time it sits on it's sidestand. Is there a special base i can lay down that will take care of it, do I need to heat the tank, to "sweat" out the vapors, I need to know what I did wrong so it don't happen again. Thanks for the guidance. Corey |

Guess I found out, adhesion promotor aint the way to go, peeled back a few bubbles and there was some separation between the primer and the tank, plus I got some good info from an expert. Thanks Court!! |

I'm quite familiar with those goofs Bomber. They did the chrome wheels on my old tuber.Did a great job might I add.But.....I then sent them the biz from a local builder here in town that sent them 3 sets of wheels to be done. They were all awful. Some had grinding marks, some the prep work wasn't done right so in return the finish product looked bad.One the plating looked wavey.Be careful. They made good on all the wheels.Let me add that these wheels were sent to them in December received in poor quality.Amediately sent back and finally returned again for the final time in mid July. |

thanks for the tip, Bad -- I'll stay on my toes, for sure, but I and they know it's an experiment seems to me that makin good on slip ups is high praise -- it's tough to be good all the time, tougher, I think to admit a mistake and fix it sides, derned near anyting is better than the paint I've been able to get ;-{ |

But when you commit to being a dealer for them and your first order is screwed up and then you have 3 bike tied up in your shop and 3 customers waiting for there bikes till july.Thats 8 months. No thanks.I'm sorry Bomber if ya screw up and admit it to fix it.Then doit in a orderly fashion. Not put the work at the bottom of the pile.Heres something I kinda stand behind. One unhappy customer will tell on a average 10 people of there bad experience. But in your case its a experiment whatya have to lose right. |

Will be picking up my freshly painted body work on Friday, looking forward to posting some pics. Painter has suggested waiting up to a month to fuell it up if I want to be sure there will not be bubbling issues. He said he followed the recommended procedures i got from this site, thanks again Al. He also recommended the same time frame for application of my vinyl decals. I don't want to ruin my paint but I am dying to ride... |
