So if it sounds like theres a rock in my fan when it kicks on does that mean the bearings are going n I'll need a new fan? |

When I reach in and spin it by hand it doesn't do it tho...? I would HATE to tear it all down n remove the shock to remove the fan just to find out the fan is fine. |

I don't know if this can be applied to the XBs but.. I have one of those small table top fans that I use in the summer. Last summer it started making a god awfull noise like a bearing had grenaded. Upon inspection I discovered that the fan blade had simply loosened and when it spun it wobbled and hit upon the fan blade cage/guard. After I tightened it up the problem went away. Again, I don't know if this applies to the XB but it might be worth a look. |

If that fan is like a PC cooling fan it'll have a shaft that the blade and magnets are mounted to. This shaft runs through the armature and is secured by a small clip. "Most" of them have oilite bushings, the better ones have ball bearings. While swapping my O2 sensor the other day I gave my fan a spin and there was quite a bit more resistance than I liked. It didn't just keep on spinning. This makes me assume that they used the bushings. These bushings can work out of their housing and allow the fan blades to wobble like Metalstorm says... You can remove the grill over the fan w/o removing the damping unit (be careful to not cross thread the screws when you put the grill back on... The lower left one is a... yeah... that). after you remove the cover, you should be able to check the fan to see if the blade portion wobbles. You should only be able to move the blades in/out a little, but no side to side at all... |
