My tach on my 97 S1 will jump around every now and then, its starting to happen a lot more often though. It will swing wildly back and fourth real quick, its worse above 3k. I checked the connections and they seem tight. Any ideas to look for, maybe a bad tach? Anyone have a tach that they want to get rid of in good cond? Thanks in advance. Tom C. |

That really sounds like a loose wire to me. Perhaps the loose wire is within the tach housing itself? The vibration sensitivity really makes it sound like a chafed wire or a loose connection somewhere. Check around the steering area for a sneaky wire that's chafed through to touch ground. |

rule of thumb for electrical problems -- it's very likely a ground issue -- |

Mine just started doing that two days ago. Do your dash lights flicker with it, or is it just your tach? |

expect a ground issue if it's dropping down suddenly...if it's all over the place, a faulty sensor or ballast resistor is the more likely culprit |

mine bounces....but only slightly....then again...I blame the injection system....LMAO Chase |

Mine bounces all over the place. It's worst when I'm in neutral. When I blip the throttle, it bounces to the right. When I shut the throttle, it bounces back to the left. Damn tach... rt |

Daaam thang - you oughta get that looked at. Mine's got this funny red line on it right past the 6 but I'll be darned if the needle doesn't go right past it nearly to the 7!! Should I be worried? It might be a ground problem??? since whenever it happens my front wheel is off the ground? Cereal, If your lights flicker at the same time check the connections - the S2 did that a couple of times when I was backing it out of the garage - had a loose wire and whenever I put the bars to full lock it would pull it loose, straighten the bars and viola, lights and gauges again. |

Mine seems to be linked with smiles, and I think its contagious....as when there is more than one buell, we all seem to have the same problem... Chase |

My lights on the gauges also flicker with the tach jumping. It will both drop down and then jump up wildly. It doesn't do it all the time but is way worse above 3k. I'll double check on the connections again. Thanks, Hodakaguy |

local parts store sell spray electrcal contace cleaner- use this each and every time you remove a connection. Great preventive maintance. Also before reconnection use a dab of dielectric gease. Check and clean all grounding points. I bet if you do this the problem will be fixed. |

The last time I saw this was on a '96 S1 just before the battery negative cable broke clean off. I ended up fabricating a new one in half an hour out of 20 separate strands of speaker cable all cut to the same length, ends twisted together each end and held on between two big washers. Ran fine like that . Out of idle curiosity I left it like that for a year. No problems whatsoever . Turns out there's a warantee recall on that stock negative cable...that's what I'd look at first, then your ground at the tach. |

I THINK JIMINCALIF HAS IT PINNED. THATS WHAT MY 96 S1 DID AND ALSO MY FRIENDS 98 S1W. TACH FLUTTERED FOR A WHILE AND THE GROUND CABLE BROKE. I USED SPEAKER WIRE TO GET ME HOME TOO. SEEMS THE HARDER THE BIKE IS RODE THE SOONER THE CABLE BREAKS. GENERALLY RIGHT UNDER THE EYE CONNECTOR ON THE BATTERY IT WILL CRACK THEN FAIL. THERE IS A RECALL FOR THAT AND SAFETY RECALLS NEVER EXPIRE. THEY FOLLOW THE VIN #. |
