I had a minor low-side not too long ago that resulted in some very minor damage. The Dark Horse Moto sliders are worth every penny. See for yourself... The only drag in the whole event is the damage to my ceramic-coated headers. It's fugly. There's a good chance I'll do it again... eventually. I'm also 100% certain this has/will happen to others. So I'd love to see one of the many talented fabricators/suppliers we have here come up with some options for protecting the headers from rash. They should be easily replaceable, hide the rash if already there (as in my case), and come in different color options. Thoughts? (I don't think the existing heat shield that's currently available will cut the mustard.) |

I was thinking about chopping up a set of the old HD pipes that I have laying around and making my own for the Buell. But I think the chrome would be too flashy...look WAY outta place. I'm going to hit up a few fabricator buds of mine to see if they can hook me up with something off of their tube benders. |

I'm not 100% sure of the story behind this sorry sight, but as you can see XB damage is universal no matter what country you live in. 05 XB12s 230mls on the clock, 3 days old.

Mines about the same shape as Stoobr2. However, it was like that when I bought the bike so I can't take the blame. However, I do agree that it would be a good idea given the cost of replacement pipes. |

To hell with the cost of the pipes...how about the PITA it is to replace the headers? A pipe guard would be nice...something that will take the impact and road rash and save the pipe. |

It looks like the idea is gaining some momentum!

Training wheels for a sport-bike? I'll pass. You get an "A" for creativity. But it looks like you still need some practice using them. |

Have you checked out the crash cages made by powers for stunters? http://www.powersbikeworx.com/index_2.html Not what I'd call aesthetically pleasing, but definitely protect your headers. |

That's an excellent idea for a track bike. It's overkill for what I want now though. Using that along with the other assorted sliders would yield a very "dropable" track bike. hmmm..... Daves, if you're listening, the above just made an XB12 track bike more feasible to me. I wonder how much it weighs. |

How many of you want them? Maybe I could take some orders, buy enough for them to give me a deal and then do the 10% Badweb discount on them? |

I was thinking that the 12 O'clock rack could also double as a heavy duty luggage mounting point .... |

What is the price of a new exhaust header? My view is that anything that protrudes from and ties directly into the header intended to protect the header will only increase the exposure of and thus impact energy subjected upon the header and therefore poses an even more serious risk of damaging much more expensive parts such as the cylinder heads. The stunt bar appears to avoid that problem. But again, how much is a brand new header? Or a new application of ceramic coating? Not to mention the dork factor of any such "header-slider." Bigger axle sliders and bar-ends would seem to do the trick. Note that Dago's header damage was much less severe than Stoobr's; this is very likely due to Dago's rear axle sliders lifting the side of the bike that little bit more up off the pavement. So maybe the racing version of the rear sliders is the ultimate solution?
In case anyone notices... I removed some posts by a non-sponsor and those related that I feel violated board policy concerning marketing of products. $205 for new XB12 headers (minus our BadWeB discount). I don't think it's the price that people are about - it's the work involved in replacing them. Having something that can absorb impact by itself (like a baseplate and an impact plate, with something in between for just that purpose). I'd rather spend $200 on a header-slider than $200 on a header - less work to change it. Not everybody has the tools to drop the engine down. I've got the racing sliders...if I go down I'll let you know how well they protect. |
