and another. thought the flag was a nice touch. about 60 crisp degrees or so, the only sounds a gentle breeze rustling thru the trees and an icy stream cascading just below. seems like a good way to close out today's ride. from here we still had about 140 miles to get home, thru some pretty fierce heat down in the valley, but a great day of riding, and hopefully work doesn't suck TOO bad tomorrow...

ride to lean,
Ferris

re: Dr. Greg - I'm sure that he's just a heck of a swell guy ... but is he the kind of suave sophisticate who can dress himself in a hotel parking lot, exuding an air unfazed aplomb, all the while giving the little old ladies at the restaurant windows the thrill of a lifetime? Hah! I thought not.

nice, Dino, was wondering when you'd get around to posting that. suave sophisticate? ME??? who'da thunk it? : )

my brother Doug will be chagrined to find his name has been changed to Greg, tho. (guess we can always blame it on Court... ; ) )

thanks SmokeDaddy, looking forward one of these days to finally meeting you, and sharing some tales, and maybe heading out for a quick spin around the neighborhood?

Hmmm, that's what I get for looking back (only so far) to confirm the name. And here I was thinking that it was good I had looked back since I'd thought it was Doug!

Oh well, it has always been my philosophy that, since I'm gonna screw up eventually anyway, might just a well get it done right up front!

Dun’no Ferris,

One of the reason(s) I retired early was to travel throughout the US, Mexico and South America on a motorcycle. When I took my 10,000+ mile trip up to Canada after the B.R.A.G. event in Taos, I made a commitment to myself that I'd do just that. I thoroughly realized what I've missed over the years by not doing so on a regular basis. An unquestionably incredible adventure for me, not to mention the people I ran into and stayed with. It was a complete re-born type experience that I took very seriously. I realized my job wasn’t as important as I thought it was.

Unfortunately I’m not sure what I'm going to do about my back injury as it's getting worse and definitely keeping me from ridding, let alone daily routines. Hopefully I'll find out some additional options available sometime in early August, don’t know for sure. I don't care for a couple of the possible consequences of an operation explained to me at the present time (like shitting my pants and/or not being able to walk). Of course doing nothing will produce similar results. I suppose I’ll have to grow some balls and toss a coin within the next month.

That has to be the perfect day!!!!!!!!!
Very nice to see some pics of the beautiful eastern Sierras. Didn't know how much I needed that until I noticed my big grin seeing this & also thinking of that trip to the portal. Hamburgers & Alpine streams are great combos! Esp. when just a few miles away it's in the umpteen temps.
Much better than my day of... work. Descriptions of which would be too depressing for this bright spot.
Those cabins give me thoughts for Sky Rider.
Yes, a more active Bear would be a happier Bear.
Gota see those meadows some day!
Well I did ride the XB to & from work anyway.
Whenever you can, keep those pics coming as they are the greatest anti-depressant!

Smoke that's a hard one. I know a bit (maybe) of how you feel. Any time I give the word they would happily put me under the knife. Try EVERYTHING else first as there is no going back. The exercises help me some but oddly riding my XB makes me feel much better the next day. Not during tho. I've sometimes wondered if Dino & Ferris ever watch me get off my bike at stops. Another reason for full coverage helmets & loud pipes is so I don't scare people if I have to put my left foot down at stops. Covers the screaming and tears. I'm still determined to work through the pain for now but... someday?
Whatever way you go I wish you well.

Smoke, did we meet at the BRAG ride in Taos? that seems like so long ago, one of my many past lives. my apologies if we did and i've forgotten, an ocurrence that is happening with increasing frequency of late.

i closed my comments to you above with a "?" because i've gathered from your posts that riding for you these days is not a particularly viable option. i know what you mean when you say that your 10,000-mile ride was a "re-born type experience" and find that as my days click by it's even MORE important to me than ever to get out and ride while i still can. i've been doing this (adventure riding) for about 35 years now, and the excitement and anticipation i felt as we were warming up the bikes yesterday morning was as great and wonderful as the rides i used to take back when i was a teen.

i hope there's a very bright light at the end of the tunnel for you, Jim. i've always enjoyed your words here on BADWEB, and i think i've got a pretty good idea of the passion you have for riding. here's to hoping that there are still some miles and smiles out there with your name on them. : )

"I brought Dino up here once"

I remember it well ... especially the wonderful crisp air after the heat of Death Valley. I can stillfeel that air.

And, of all your most excellent photos, "coming down from Horseshoe Meadows, on the way to Whitney Portal, lupines in the foreground, Owens Dry Lake in the background, about 3000 feet below", is my favorite! Thanks for the memories.

Unibear - You gotta get yourself up there!

Unibear, i'll make you an offer: me 'n D are crunching between now and MotoGP at Laguna but our August ride schedule looks pretty skinny. you pick the day - either August 6th or 7th or 20th or 21st - and we'll go do Horseshoe Meadows, like, so you can be active. : )

if we launch from here early we'll beat the heat on the way up, and have enough time to do Horseshoe, the Portal again (so you can go clothes shopping...), and i bet THIS time we can make it clear to Onion Meadows without being turned back by snow!

if you can get one of those days off and are interested, give a ping so i can mark it on the ol' sk'dooly. : )

Henrik, thanks! looking forward to the day that we get to ride together again, maybe BRATPAC II, eh? : )

Dino, i had hoped for a little more from that shot, but it's also one of my faves from the day. the pic REALLY needed softer, more-angled lighting - a lot closer to sunset woulda been nice - and a tripod instead of hand-held while sitting on an idling motorcycle.

hey, if Unibear bites on my offer above, it'd be most excellent to have your company for the day, too. we could replicate that photo so the troops could see how it's SUPPOSED to be done. : )

Hmmm, you should get the NWS to set up a live cam up there so we can check to see what time of day provides the most dramatic lighting!

You have a point...that isn't the most attractive group of models I've ever seen. I guess you coulda stepped around them to photograph the lake. Of course, then you wouldn't have gotten the scoots. Sometimes you just can't win!

Smoke, did we meet at the BRAG ride in Taos?

Ferris,

I went to the first B.R.A.G. event held in Taos. I think that was in 98'. I know Aaron, Don and EB were there. My bike looked like yours (in the picture when you had all the wood piled on it). I went to the next 2 events that Chick's put on and haven't been back since (no particular reason).

------

Henrik,

Thanks for the offer. I'll take any help I can get. I just don't know who to trust.

------

Glenn,

I've had this problem for quite a few years now. The pain isn't the problem. I can deal with that. It's past that.

Smoke, i was at the first BRAG rally in Taos, rode in with Fireman Jim (he was on his red S2, i was on a red X1) after which we headed cross-country to Deal's Gap and hooked up with JB2 and Henrik and the gang for the first BRATPAC rally. met Aaron and Susan there in Taos, and Don, and of course Erik, and probably yourself. i was the one who pulled over the pickup truck that was blocking our way early during the Adventure Ride so we could FINALLY blaze along in the manner to which we're all accustomed. remember Chick singling me out for my "heroics" during dinner that night? in my vast collection of pix, which i will eventually get up on my website for all to see, i've got some decent ones from that trip.

Oh'yea, I remember that. There was a HUGE long freaking line of bikes backed up. At the party, I sat with (damn can't remember here name, she writes for HD now instead of Buell) who was super nice chick. Oh and I won a Chick's t-shirt (woop'ie). I don't have any digital images of the event and my scanner is toast.

BTW, who was the guy with the super clean and trick looking nuke/blue/orange S1, had a joker sprocket on it I think and a bunch of other mod(s)? He rented a real tiny u-haul and had to take the handle bars off to get it in the trailer.

Crummy flick,

i had to cut thru the parking lot of a real estate company to get ahead of that truck and pull them over. i was ready to KILL the driver. he (and his wife) were the sweetest people you'll ever meet, elderly, and when i told him why i had forced him off the road (as something like 100 angry Buellers roared by), he was shocked and amazed. in that entire stretch he had not once looked in his mirrors and he honestly had no clue that we were all stacked up behind him. good thing they were so nice or i'd have taken away his keys. : )

not sure the bike you're talking about - i mean, this ride happened last century! talk some more about YOUR ride after the Taos weekend, sounds fabulous, i don't mind if you post about it here. : )
