A little background: in March I had the Pro-Series cams installed in my '01 Blast. Ran well for about a month then I started having backfires under a steady throttle (cruising). 2-4 LOUD ones (ka-bang bang bang!), the bike hesitates momentarily and picks back up. I also notice the top speed will not exceed 72MPH. I take it to my local shop who adjusts the jetting and supposedly the timing. The top speed issue has been fixed, but now it's still backfiring and won't idle (running rough and backfiring through carb). It's also popping a LOT on decelleration. They also replace a broken a motor mount bolt. So I ride it a day and it's running terrible, they check it out again and say my carb-to-engine boot has a crack in it. I replace that and it still is running the same. Then this past weekend I find the engine mount bolt has broken again! My limited knowledge says the timing is still off and the engine is running so roughly that it's breaking the mounting bolt. Can anyone offer some ideas on what's wrong? UPDATE 6-14 In response to your resonses: I do not have the Pro-Series intake installed, just the cams. I did have to have the ignition module replaced in early April. The shop installed a module from a 2003 Blast, saying that it was better than the '01 unit. It ran fine for a while, then I started getting the backfires while cruising. And then the fun began... I agree that ones choice of a mechanic makes a big difference. I'm going to a new on this week. (Message edited by dreamweaver on June 15, 2005) |

Is your air mixture screw 2 3/4 out from light bottom? A 2001 - eh - bad ignition could well be the problem as well. GT - JBOTDS! EZ |

I would check your carb boot again. Make sure it is installed correctly becuase it can be real crooked if you have the pro series intake and it will run like crap if it isn't installed right. |

Carb Boot: Line everything up and tighten per the service manual. Don't over-torque it. Those massive engine mount bolts: The dealer didn't follow the procedure in the service manual. That's why they broke. The GREATEST ally or enemy of your vehicle is the person who services it. The person who cares most about how it's serviced is YOU. Get a factory service manual & tools, get greasy, and start enjoying a motorcycle which appreciates its owner. -Saro |

I'm on my 3rd carb boot in a month. It only happens when my girl is riding the Blast. My dealer has no idea, but they're happy to keep replacing it. I would do it myself, but it's always on the opposite side of town from my tools. What makes these things split constantly? I'm thinking maybe the vibration of being in to high a gear, since it only happens when she's riding. But that just sounds silly when I say it out loud. |

Usually intake boot failure is caued by squeezing the intake with your leg while riding. The boots also don't like a lot of backfires. I'm asuming that your bike has a Pro-series intake on it. The stock intake ystem should not be giving you problems. James |
