Hey guys I have a few questions on warranty. 1. I'm at the 1000 mile mark and wondering if the dealer has to preform the first oil change in order for the warranty to hold up, or can I just preform the change my self and save $$$ 2. the dealer said that it will run me about $260.00 for the procedure, full hd synthetic dose this seam to be about right thanks TY |

My understanding is that no m/c or car dealer can void a warranty because you do the service yourself or have it done somewhere else. But, you have to document everything, keep receipts, etc. And they can always claim that "you didn't know what you were doing." Tim |

Hundo, That should include the full 1000 mile service not just the oil change |

I'm at the 1000 mile mark too, and $260 sounds pretty steep to me. What exactly do they do at the first service? If it's just oil and filter, that seems like a rip off! |

There is a lot more to the 1K service than just oil and filter. I think they change all your fluids and give your bike a good once over to check for excessive wear. I think I paid about $260 for my 1K, but after they told me everything it involved I didn't feel like I was getting ripped off. |

I've also been told that the 1K service is pretty much the most important service that you will do on the bike, so that also softened the $260 blow. |

you should drain and fill the transmission, adjust the primary chain, buy a service manual, lube and adjust the clutch cable, buy a service manual, lube and adjust throttle cables. i think the required filter and lubricants, and service manual can be obtained for less than 260 dollars. |

How much of a job is it to adjust the primary chain? Tim |

about 4 minutes. use the service manual, a T-27 torx, a 1/4 inch allen wrench, and a 7/8 end wrench. did i mention the service manual? |

Get the Manual (service and parts)!! Repeat. Whenever you buy a new bike, get the books thrown in as part of the deal. |

a general note for every one: YOU CAN CHANGE YOUR OIL. THIS WILL NOT VOID YOUR WARRANTY. CHANGING YOUR OIL IS OKAY! THE MANUFACTURER OF YOUR MOTOR VEHICLE CAN NOT PENALIZE YOU IN ANY WAY FOR CHANGING THE OIL. AN OIL CHANGE WILL NOT VOID YOUR WARRANTY. do remember to replace the oil drain plug, and use the correct torque specification. |

I've got the service and parts manual - but not here at work. Forgive my ignorance, but what is a "T-27 torx"? Tim |

It is a specific size of "Torx" fastener. They are all over your bike. There is a Torx driver in your tool kit on the bike. Get a better one or some torx sockets. |

The T-27 Torx is the new secret, jet fighter the Air Force is coming out with! Seriously, it is a special little tool. If you look at the cover on your primary used to inspect the primary chain, instead of an allen head screw/bolt, you will see a pointy little head on the screw. That is the Torx head...lots of them on the bike. You will need to buy a set of the screwdrivers/sockets with the torx tips. I think the T-27 is the most common. Oh, your tool kit has an angled version of the T-27. You will need it to remove your airbox cover and lots of other little bits and pieces...a handy tool. Does anyone know why H-D/Buell went to the Torx heads? Something about torquing them down???

Torx 27 is the tool that will get the screws out that hold your bodywork and some other panels onto the bike. Kind of resembles an allen key head but is more star shaped. |

Oh. I have a whole set of those - sockets and screwdrivers. Just didn't know that was the proper name. Always called them "star" heads. Thanks. |

Oh, lots of guys have talked about stripping screws and bolts. I have not done it yet on my bike, but be careful torquing them down. |

My dealer made it VERY clear to me that if I did the service at 1000 miles instead of taking it to the dealer that it WOULD in fact void the warranty. They said that AFTER the 1000 mile service, as long as you retain receipts for the oil and filters, they really don't care who does the service. |

Its the 1000 mile check that I haven't had done yet and I do have the big blue book (thanks Dave s)just wondering if $260 is justified for what hd performs on my xb. When I bought the bike the dealer gave me a piece of paper that listed what they do on the 1000 mile check. I know I could do it all my self ,with the book and get to know my girl a little better just wasn't sure if I did do the work myself that the warranty would still be good thank for the replies |

i know of at least 2 dealerships in my area that the 1k is free if you bought your bike there and i think a 3k check is free to if i am not mistaken. |

As far as I know you can do the 1000 mile service and keep your warranty as long as you keep receipts of lubricants and parts purchased. I believe the oil needs to be a HD product as well. There is a service section in the back of the owner's manual that details everything that is done at each of the recommended service intervals. |

Jeez, where to start. 1st, you can do your own service including the 1000 mile without voiding your warranty. Do you have the tools and knowledge to do it right or are you going to mess up your bike, well that's up to you to decide. 2nd, what is your time worth? After you buy all the fluids you are going to spend 2-3 hours doing the 1K check up list. I want to spend my spare time riding not wrenching. 3rd, 260.00 sounds like a lot to me, we charge about 160-175.00 I think. 4th, if you do your own work and IF you break/strip/F up something are you going to take ownership of that or try to have it covered under warranty even though it was not the bikes or Buell fault? Some will, some won't. 5th, keep receipts for everything and start a log 6th, you do not have to use HD products, they just have to meet the requirements and be as good. 7th, always keep in mind that some people are very good mechanics, most, myself included are not. What seems easy to a good mechanic will cause some lots of grief. 8th, There is no such thing as free. |

very well said ... but not all of the staff that we encounter at our various dealerships are accountable, helpful and knowledgeable as you are ....or and most importantly HONEST Bill |

My 12 is going in tomorrow for the 1K service, I was quoted $226 and feel its fully worth it. I can wrench fairly well (SM is always the first 'upgrade' to purchase) but I'd rather the dealer give her a good once over at this interval. Gives me piece of mind as well as kicks off (hopefully) a good, long relationship with my dealer. In the meantime I've made sure to keep tabs on the general items as the miles were put on, adjusting as needed and changed the oil at 500mi. I enjoy getting acquainted with a bike but Dave hit the nail for me... for the bigger service items I'd end up taking triple the time to complete them, even if its standard stuff. I don't like to rush. |

I just got my 1rst service done. $212 (canadian)taxes included. There was $45 of parts (oil, filter, gasket, o-ring), 2 hours of labor $140.... and the fu?%@&! taxes. The check list of the first service is long, 20 items but lots of them are really easy to do. Like: check tire, check different liquid level, check the belt, etc... I think it's not so bad since I don't have the time to do it now. But I will skip some and do them myself. |
