i would like to paint my header flanges do they get more than 500 degrees hot? |

the paint i want to use is rated at 500 anyway, my flanges are corroded so i figured i'd take them down with a dremel and give them a few coats of paint, at worst the paint will probably bubble and peel no? |

Although I have never painted headers, I do work in the paint industry. You can get paint in a conventional spray can that will withstand up to 1500 degrees F, I think you would do better with that. I do not think any paint you can apply from a spray can will withstand the heat cycles your header goes through for very long. I would think that spray painting the headers yourself would be at best a short term solution. But I have no practical knowladge of this application. |

Get a paint rated for AT LEAST 1500... Though I have no figure on the harleys EGT's, I know that some cars run as hot a 1100-1200 degrees... And no, the paint will not last too long.... Chase |

The paint will not last... Any more than a few weeks even. Get the cerami-coated or jet-hot coated. |

that's not what i wanted to hear! thanks for the response guys! i kinda figured they would get crazy hot, it's just the flanges i wanted to paint, you can barely see them anyway. i suppose i shoulda just bought new ones, i will the next time i hafta mess with the exhaust. |

I painted my headers with the 1500 and it's holding up fine. Its ceramic based if that helps!! |

well, looks like i have the chance to buy new flanges, i tried to bolt the new force pipe on to my bike last nite and i could barely get the nuts on the studs, 1 thread each maybe. i heard something on this board somewhere that you have to use some kinda flat gasket with these pipes? i searched the kv but have'nt come up with anything yet, they would have to be really flat cause it appears i still have at least a half inch more thread to crank down using the conical shaped stock gaskets, i was out in the garage till 2 in the morning on a work nite tying to force the pipes on to no avail. therefore i think i'll pick up those new flanges today and some new gaskets too! anyone happen to know which gaskets these are? and thank you for the painting tips! |

I don't have my service manual with me but I think the header flange nuts are only supposed to be tightened down to something less than eight or ten pounds... |

i have'nt cranked them down at all i can barely catch one thread, did you have to use se gaskets or something for your force? |

all right, so i ran out to the local hd and picked up two of the thin flat exhaust gaskets, i'll give them a whirl when i get home. i also purchased two brand spankin new flanges, they call them exhaust ring clamps. the gaskets if anyone is interested are part# 17048-98 and were $7.95 each!! ouch, the flanges (nice shiny chrome) are part# 65328-83 and were $10.90ea. i'll report my progress or lack there of later. again thanks for the help everyone!! |

Yea, The Screaming Eagle Flat Mesh Gaskets work the best. They work Perfect with the Force Pipe (Flat Flange). I also painted my chrome Flanges with Flat Black 1500 Hot Paint. (Out of a Can) The Paint is holding up Fine. Watch that Red Silicone rubber Bracket, Mine melted. I ended up wrapping Header wrap between the rubber and the Pipe. (Tie Wired in Place) |

yup, ran into another problem! apparently the previous owner must've snapped a header stud cause i can see where the original studs were in the front head, the new studs are in the opposite spots causing much difficulty putting the lower front stud nut on, as a matter of fact i can't touch it with a ratchet or a box end! with my old header it was difficult i had to shave down one of the cylinder fins to get a socket on there, now with the force pipe it's quite the project all of a sudden, i'm going to sears to see if they have a low pro socket wrench or any kind of wacky set up that'll give me access to that nut!! it's driving me crazy!! we've had rain for weeks here but yesterday and today it's been oo so nice! not to mention i'm dying to hear that growl from the new pipes! hey robert is that the front mount your talking about? it seemed to me that rubber on an exhaust pipe was a little funny! |

Yes, Hi Temp Red Rubber (Ha) isn't Hi Enough. They originally sent me an "Old" Style Black Rubber one, which they happily replaced. Make sure yours is Red (Hi Temp) and also use one small piece of Header Wrap to insulate the rubber. Secure it with safety Wire as it will blow out as it Heats Up. I went thru many different mods and this worked on mine and a friends X1. This pipe is amazing for Power. (and Sound under acceleration) I didn't really care for the resonating on deceleration though. One note, They told me the Pipe shouldn't get Hot enough to melt the Rubber and it must be a Lean condition. So I've installed a Power Commander with a Race ECM. I am still a little skeptical of any rubber holding up under Direct contact with "Any" Exhaust. Also, They're Customer Service was Very Nice to Work with! |

Hey Tripp, I just noticed this. How do you like the Nallin 1250 Kit? My X1 needs new Pistons and Cylinders. For specifics check out my Post in KV - Engine Mechanical "Oil Gusher". Thanks and any help I can give on your Force Install just ask, I became an Expert on this Awesome Pipe. |

i love the 1250kit, more power over entire rpm range, i expected a moderate increase in power but was pleasantly surprised with noticeable increase, and the folks over at nrhs are friendly and knowledgeable. if i had to do it again however, i would have had the heads done at the same time, will probably get them done this winter. |
