Are the Canadian bikes 49 state or Cali style - some early 2001 bikes had that problem with the valve - easy to replace also - a handfull - but if its a Cali style it could be the smog canister doing it to you - GT - JBOTDS! EZ |

I think this my first post here but I've been watching you for a while. I had the weirdest thing happen to me yesterday on the road with my '01 Blast. I was cruising along at about 50 and I picked up a vibration I hadn't felt in the 4000 miles I've ridden her. I planned on taking her to the shop this month, But I can't help but feel really paranoid about the change in my baby's demeanor. Does any one have any ideas on what could be happening. The vibration becomes stronger with the clutch engaged. |

Could be anything from a tire that has gone out of balance (thrown a wheel weight), to a broken engine mount. If you're mechanical, give the bike a very close inspection and perform all the normal service. Check torque of components and adjust primary etc. If you're not mechanical, have a dealer inspect the bike. Anytime you get a vibration out of the blue like that, it is very important to find out what it is before you ride any further. |

Check/adjust primary chain. Be sure to check for tightest position of primary chain and adjust it to within specifications at that point. Too tight can damage shaft bearings. Also check exhaust tract and integrity of its mountings/connections. |

Spidaman: The bolt that connects the head to the front motor mount on the left side has broken off. If I'm right, when you get it replaced, make sure you get the Buell Blast! part number, which I don't have. If the dealer just puts another bolt in, or if you do it yourself, the bolt will likely break again. Been there, done that. Replaced it myself this last time, and it has lasted longer than any of the other 3 before it. I'f I'm wrong, check other motor mount bolts. |

You are correct - motor mount bolt - I'm betting - and this topic will in time be moved to the motormount KV section. GT - JBOTDS! EZ |

S'up Buellers been out for a while, had to change the rocker box gasket to metal to roll again, shes runnin ok but still get a miss feels like starvation? Sometimes she backfires a bit after a good warmup run but then evens out.Took her to a crotch rocket racer(JAP)and 4star auto mech. for a looksee,he ran his hand(or finger)into the tailpipe OOOOOOOOo and it came out clean he thought it might be runnin tooooo lean? methinks I might have to do a carb redo and possible mod on the needle over the diaphram to open up more fuel to the mix chamber??????Past history considered.........Any comments appreciated. |

If its stock, I see no reason for any carb modifications. Your bio doesnt say any mods or any abnormal riding weather conditions (altitude, cold,etc.). My initial guesses would be intake boot or ignition module, in that order. Also check the plug gap, gas tank vent hose(plugged, kinked) and carb vacuum plug (its where on CA models the vacuum line connects, my book shows a plug, but I dont know if there is actually a plug on non CA models or just a solid fitting from the factory). If the stock main jet is a 165, then you could go up to the 170 (stock on later years). If you have made any modifications, that would be helpful to note. |

I've been having problems with backfires mostly while cruising. I'll get 2-3 loud ones, the bike will bog down and then pick back up. Sometimes it happens at less than 40 MPH, but mostly it's while I'm cruising at steady speeds from 50 to 70MPH. It mostly happens at 1/4 throttle or more and never when the throttle is closed and I'm decellerating. I did have new ignition module installed a few months ago; it ran fine for a while but now I can't figure out why it's backfiring. |

Dreamweaver, Sorry to hear that, I have been there done that. I checked out everything...twice. Finally replaced the ignition module and all the problems went away. I had switched out coils, wires, plugs, everything you could think of but nothing worked until I replace the Ignition module. Its all discussed in the knowledge vault. Where are you getting your work done? I bought the module from Stone Mountain, the discount more than offset the shipping...and I got the part in 3 days to boot, and only took 20 minutes to replace(tank was off) I live east of you north of ST Johns. I am planning on riding north the first week of August, let me know if you are interested in going. |

Hi all, I`m new to the site and new to the 2002 Blast I bought.. I had rear wheel bearing trouble where I had to replace the rear wheel..I found a used complete rear wheel setup but I don`t know the year of it..It does have a smaller sprocket so I must use my sprocket off my 2002...My question is: The smaller sprocket has some spacers between the wheel and the sprocket,My 2002 does not have them, do I need to use the spacers when I bolt my 2002 sprocket to the other wheel? Thanks Joe |

The sprocket should have no spacers between it and the wheel. It will have washers between the pulley cover and pulley though. New bolts are suggested to be used by the manual, however if you re use the old bolts be sure they are original bolts, washers and use loctite.Torque bolts to 28-31 ftlbs. PS I would be interested in the other small sprocket (if it looks like the original, only smaller). |

Thanks Gearheaferiko,The smaller sprocket does look original but it didn`t have the washers between the pulley and cover..It has a small tube like spacer the keeps the bolts from crushing the plastic cover with the allen head bolts..My 2002 has the washers with torks headed bolts(2 were destroyed removing them) I used the bolts, tube spacers and the spacers between the wheel and sprocket from the unknown year wheel and used the sprocket from the 2002..I now know I need to remove the spacers from the wheel/sprocket (thanks) But what about the little tube spacers used on the sprocket cover? P.S. I don`t want to get rid of the smaller sprocket just yet..I want to find out more about it.. Thanks Joe |

The 2002 uses only the 5 bolts & washers. The bolts are shoulder bolts and do not need the tube spacer. WARNING: The smaller sprocket was recalled due to the fact that they exploded in use. Due to this fact and the repair manual stating to use only new bolts every time they are loosened, I would caution against using anything but the bolts that came stock on the 2002 Blast (or 2001-2005 Blasts with the new larger sprocket). I would use the smaller sprocket only as a pattern for fabrication of a billet piece. |

Thanks for the info,Looks like I need to order some new mounting hardware for the sprocket... I was wondering if that was the recall sprocket or not... Give my an address and I ship it to you.. Thanks Joe |

The attitude (bad I assume) is typical of dealers towards the Blast (and, to a lesser extent, Sportsters & Buells in general). There are good dealers out there though, which is why I traveled 50 miles to buy my last bike even though there were at least 4 dealers that were closer. (Glendale HD/Buell) |

I have another concern on my 02..While the motor is running I hear a rattle coming from the front of the motor but it will stop when 2 people are on it or when the bike is on the kick stand...The motor mounts look good..Any ideas? Thanks Joe |

Foot pegs. Cant say that for sure (without seeing the bike) but its usually those or the primary chain. |

Good call Erik, the foot peg will rattle and cause noise. |

I adjusted the primary chain,no go..The rattle is there while riding down the road...It kinda sounds like its coming from the upper motor mount or the heim joint bar(whatever its for) Its driving me nuts.. |

Tell us a little about your bike: original owner? how many miles? any modifications? accidents? Really, its probably the footpegs. Take off the passenger pegs and completely eliminate any rattle from the rider pegs (thick rubber bands work well for this and other small vibration noise due to loose parts). Since you say it goes away with a passenger or on the kickstand, it's probably external in nature. Kickstand loose? Exhaust? Horn? The Blast is a noisy motor however, especially if you have the stock exhaust. The primary chain can still cause noise, as will the valvetrain. Loose heim joints will cause more engine vibrations and will probably loosen up quickly and cause poor handling as well. The rattle noises drove me nuts in the beginning too. |

I`m the 3rd owner and it has just shy of 10,000miles The mod I see is a BU-5000 K&N air cleaner...I`m pretty sure its been laied down a few times.. I can not find anything loose on it anywhere..It could be the valves,it sounds like the noise is coming from that area... Is there directions on valve adjustments? |

Wedge, There are no valve adjustments, the Blast (like all modern HD products) has hydraulic lifters that do not require you to do valve asjustments. The hiem joint is there to align the engine and the frame. You either have something loose up there, or a heim joint is going bad, or the trottle cables are not tied down and hitting the inside of the tank. I's start checking stuff for tightness. And make sure that the wiring snd throttle cables are tied down underneath the tank. The little aircooled engines are noisy, but if it something that you notice while going down the road as a new noise, maybe it's pinging?? |

I found the rattle.. The front motor mount has a broken bolt on the left side....Is there an easy way to get a drill and easy out in there to remove it? |

Ok,I`m getting alittle dishearded about the blast...After reading about others with same broken bolt as I leads me to beleave there is a flaw in the design...I wonder what else is flawed on the bike, anybody know? I did get the bolts out(the other one broke)and just as I figured, they are odd ball bolts(7/16x14x2 1/4"so the local hardware store doesn`t stock them..I used some 2" long bolts until I can find some 2 1/4" long ones... Also,Gearheaderiko I got your letter..Thanks Let me know how the billet piece comes out.. |
