ok Badwebbers.. Need help. My bikes electrical system is on the fritz, my battery will not charge... I have replaced the Voltage Regulator w/ a new Accel replacement... and the stator is putting out voltage, but what voltage should it be putting out (AC) w/ the bike at idle? someone help me out here. this is driving me insane |

Ok here is the deal.. The battery was bought on 4-19 LAST MONTH! so i called the dealer that i purchased it from and asked about the battery warrenty.. they stated it was a 6 month warrenty. but they had to test it them selves. So i broght them the battery yesturday (after charging it at my house all night at a 2amp rate of charge) and my wife took it over on her lunch, In which case the battery had lost all of its charge.. FIRST CLUE!! So they said they had to use their equipment (cause my isn't HD and inferior), and it would take all night, and they would check it in the morning.. So i called this morning right after they opened.. and sure as poo they said It is fine, putting out 13.5 volts, and 500 crankning amps.. WTF!!???!!! when i first thought it was the battery i took it to Autozone and had them preform a load test on it... IT FAILED!!! then i took it to the dealer and it passed WAIT A MINUTE!!! so i am going there on the way home and before i get it I am gonna have them TEST it again.. if they say it lost its charge and have to re-charge it.. I will raise my RED flag and say STOP!!!! the battery shouldn't loose its charge in a 6 hour time frame.... get me a new one. Oh and by the way, the bike runs great when it gets started.. just the battery won't charge... |

ok apon reading the posted thread i think my stator is HOSED!!! what is the price of that puppy? and would the Service manaul we have in the knowledge vault (96/97 S1) work on my 2002 X1? Not sure if the stator changed in that time frame... |

Ok, At 2000 RPM your Alternator should be putting out somewhere between 32-50 Volts AC. Your Voltage Regulator should drop that down to no more the 15 Volts DC. I am not sure if the service manual will work for you but its wort a go at least to look at. I picked up a new Drag Specialits Stator from Dennis Kirk for $63 after shipping. Josh |

I already emailed you some info but here is what my stator looked like when it failed. In actual fact it was not the stator but the little metal plate that holds the wiring in place. Its not a big job and should take a couple hrs and 6 beer (hehehe - drink beer after job is completed please) When ordering the stator make sure the wire is long enough as different models have different lenght wires from the stator to the plug end. |

hay Drfuyutsuki Do you know what the number of the drag specities part was? cause when i looked at dennis kirk and looked up for a Sportster 1200c it gave me this one http://www.denniskirk.com/jsp/product_catalog/Product.jsp?skuId=H21693&store=Mai n&productId=pH21693&catId=&leafCatId= wasn't sure if that was the right one |

Thats the one, you may wanna check with a parts department to ensure thats the right HD part number... They may tell you your part is a 29967-89B instead of a 29967-89A but that stator will work for both. Reepicheep made mention in the knowledge vault that there is a distinct smell if your stator fried, its hard to explain but there is a deffinate aroma if you pull you primary drive inspection cover. You'll need a 1 1/8 and a 1 3/16 nut to pull your drive gears and remember your clutch is reverse thread. (I had to go to sears to get mine, but they're craftsman so I am not complaining) |

my recent experience with a battery not charging.... Was the big ground strap from the mount block to the frame being a little loose. Well, way to loose. Acted just like the regulator or stator was bad, cept the bike ran real nice once it was started. |

And by the way it is the stator... i did an OHMs test and VOILA FRIED!!! and i know exactally what you mean about the smell.. cause the bike is in my shed (wooden w/ no windows) and i took the primary cover off, and left it for the night came back the next day and WHOAAA that stinks.. smelled like fried trans fluid.. nasty smell. |

Don't forget to bend the wire hold down clip to prevent future chafing. Just flair the edges upward that contact the wire. I put pictures in the KV somewhare a while back. |

I have the primary cover off, and i know it is a 1 1/8" socket to get the nut off the rotor, but which snap ring to i remove off the clutch? the little one infront of the bearing? or the larger one? or both HELP ME OUT HERE PEOPLES |

Blackbelt: From the porch, you are most welcome, If you can get one, a small piece of aluminum would be better for locking the chain/sprokets. Wood may leave shards in places that you don't want shards. My $.02 Work Safe Adam Jim |

I got the bike all back together, started the bike up and WAMMM-O... 35 Volts at idle.. WORKS!!! LOL! but i have a strange rattle from the primary (did i not sinch down the nut on the clutch??) nope i forgot to tension down the primary.. DANG IT!! so i take the muffler back off.. and fix it.. so far i put 150 miles on it and all is well.. So Jugallo I will be there next time..
