I just got my 9 back on the road after powder coating the wheels and mounting new tires. I had about 50 miles on the bike when one of the NEW orange seal front bearing exploded resulting in a 70 mph tank slapper. Got the bike stopped and my shorts cleaned out. Question is,,, what would have caused the new bearing to explode? Also,, I notice that my rotor is not tight. Are they set up to float? The bolts are tight but the rotor can be pushed toward the rim about 1/8th of an inch. Is this normal? |

The rotors do float and should. Sounds like maybe the bearing was damaged during pressing it back into the wheel. |

If you use a power washer it will blow the grease out of the bearing- you probably know this, but still worth mentioning. |

Sounds like a fun ride. I don't why the bearing would gernade. Yes, the rotor is made to float. There are springs behind every mount point. Sorry to hear of your problem. |

Were the NEW bearings put in after powdercoating? Just thinking out loud. |

Bearings don't explode unless there is something terribly terribly wrong with them or a piece of debris gets introduced (not likely given the size of the seal clearance). Did any of the bearing come dislodged from the race or did it simply seize? Glad you are ok. |

Those were my thoughts too, were the bearings left in the wheels when they were powder coated? If not were the bearing seat areas masked off during the paint process? |

Thanks for the quick response. No power washing. I hand wash only and have not washed the bike since powder coating. The wheel bearings were removed prior to coating and new ones installed. Concerning the rotor,,, I will have to look. I do not believe their are springs behind the rotor. It appears to be mounted directly to the wheel. I will know more upon disassembly. Any other thoughts on why the bearing eat it self? |

Big assumption here is that you had the bearings properly pulled prior to powdercoating, area was properly masked and you properly installed new bearings after paint... |

Pulled and masked. I check to see that the bearing surface was clean prior to having the new bearings installed. I cleaned out the bearing pockets with break cleaner and allowed to dry. |

Grancan1, the rotor is a full floating design With springs. |
