If most of the posts on this heading are "Old School", maybe this request could be considered "PRE-School! I finally acquired all the stock bodywork for my 91 RS from the previous owner. He trucked it to Laughlin from NY, and I met him there at the Laughlin River Run, and had a friend truck it back to LA from there. (wouldn't fit on the FLHR) In all that moving and handling, I managed to come up with the corner of the tank at the reserve switch hole broken off. I have the pieces, but I have NO idea how this area looks on a stock RS. Could one of you guys that happen to have one of these bikes take a photo of that area-left front of tank-so I can see what is exposed or covered, so I can repair accordingly? You can post it here or email it, whatever is easier. Thanks! AL |

Both of my corners are broken there also - tho mine are broken at the bolt holes. Hey Dan, I'll take copies of those so I can instruct my local shop (if I ever get around to it). |

See if this helps. I think this is either Josh or Rex's bike.

Thanks Court - that helps big time! I thought the broken area might be somewhat hidden, but NOOOO! Looks like I get to dredge up some long dorment 'glasing skills! AL |

Mine nice washers, eh? So where does the tank vent tube go? We ran all over last weekend and I think at one point I filled it too full, when I got home I had gas all over the front of the motor. Hmm, fill it too full it spits up, don't fill it enough it runs out (reserve runs out with over a gallon left in the tank). |

Hub of Pie-Maker One: The vent tube goes right smack down that hole in the middle of the steering axis. You can't see the hole in the picture, cause, well...the TUBE'S IN IT! 1) Does she ship? 2) Yes, I have your stuff. Court |

Note the key placement in the two pictures and the ACT Dan's has. |

My Rss has the key placement the same as Joshs' RS. Different years. I am guesiing they probably moved the key due to the old style causing even more weakness in that front corner. What you can't see in the pic is that I have several stress cracks in the paint at those corners. |

Speaking of tanks - mine has developed a crack and is now leaking gas. Guess I won't be trailering it to Homecoming. Anyone got a spare RS/RSS tank? |

Bring it anyway. It might just magically get fixed. Especially if they see you riding the FJR. I wonder if the tank could be plastic-welded Speaking of which, when are you planning on getting to town? I'd like to look over the FJR and maybe ask a few questions if you don't mind. |

I'll be at the factory Thurs morning after overnighting in Rockford, Il. The tank is fiberglass. hmm, 'glass welding? can't ride the FJR as it will have new tires for CLASS. I was really looking forward to schooling the whippersnappers on their XBs now that I've got the RS all setup. |

Bummer, can't make it down there Thursday morning. Maybe I'll catch up with you up in West Bend before you head back southward. If the tank is basic fiberglas it should be repairable depending on the failure mode. Is the leak due to a stress flex area? I've seen some people do amazing repairs on boats many years ago. |

I'll be in the area until Tues night. Here's an edited version of above showing where the new stress crack is:

Ouch. I've seen one boat tank with a built-in flange that was reworked to reinforce the problem area, wasn't pretty but worked for the rest of their season. |

Hey - I was out of town for a few days and you guys went FAR beyond the "call of duty" for my photo request! Thanks to all! FYI - the key switch in the '91 bodiwork I have is on the top of the outer piece like Josh's red bike, not on the tank. According to the former owner, my tank is leak-free - but then it's been hanging on a garage wall empty for 8 years or so! AL |

Al, Come to the dark side, when Buells were built in a small garage by a select few people. When the Buells stickers were just a "bit different" than they are now! Actually that is not a steering dampner. It is Eriks anti dive system that was only on a few of the first years Buells. Uses compressed gases and valving to help keep the front -end from diving. Others here like Dave Guess abd Court could tell you a lot more about it than I can. |

I have heard back from the Elves but suffice to say 2 weeks notice (fixed for Homecoming) probably isn't enough time. Guess I should have been riding it more, maybe it just misses the S3T and S1WL? |

Court, have you or anonymous found spare tanks? I've not heard this week from the factory contacts but don't want to bug them (I'll just show up w/ the leaking tank on Thurs) |

>>>Court, have you or anonymous found spare tanks? No. I've not had time to pursue it. But, I see TA's name showed up on an e-mail last night so I am going to presume he's back at full tilt. I'll put that on my list to look. I see a need. Court |
