Hey guys, I have a question about some rough starting that has recently began on my bike. Its a XB9SX with the race kit. When I thumb the starter, it fires right up and idles at 1100 RPM for about 3 seconds, then it drops down to about 500 RPM and dies. I have to repeat this several times, or I have to give it some gas to keep it running. It only does this on cold starts, because once it is warmed up after riding for awhile, it will fire right up with no restarts necessary. Are these bikes really this cold blooded? |

Hey Dtx, Sup... Yeah I got a 12 with lots of mods. been doing that here for me as well, but as you say all is well after warmed up, I just live with it shorter warm ups just hold the gas on abit for 15 , 30 seconds let go should be ok then or maybe you have to hold it for 45 secs. whatever no biggie Ride and have fun... OR check the tps but Like I say its all good with me LoL |

Try getting your TPS reset |

I'd replace the plugs first. After that, don't blip the throttle before it's warm. I ALWAYS let the bike sit for a full minute before moving it. |

Ditto what M1 said, but still get your TPS reset. |

With Mine and thee old ladys, sons etc. I fine for the first few secs. or so just hold the rpms like to 1200, 1300 whatever ,let go, let it warm up on its own time at proper rpms... and then ride slow for awhile to let that oil truly 100% warm up... I can wait that short period of time to have some funn Then if ya can... WACK that puppy..LoL But still check that tps.. :-) |

Thanks guys. I was kinda thinking the TPS was off too. I just had it reset at the 1000 mile service when they installed the race ecm. It has almost 3K on it now. Could it possibly need reseting already? And if so, how does it become out of calibration? |

Would the plugs need to be replaced at only 3K miles? I am very careful about not blipping the throttle too often. |

Dtx, Your plugs might need replacing. The TPS can get knocked out if you get a sneeze back through the intake. |

My 9sx with race kit and 4k miles has no such problem... If it starts, it keeps running. It will occasionally not start at the first blip, then you hear the fuel pump get serious for a second, and it will start up. |

Normally what I'll do is start my bike and finish putting on my gloves, then get on it and ride like normal. No fouled plugs so far. |

Sounds like the idle needs to be adjusted. Whats it idle at when warm? |

plugs are a constant they are either bad or not id say TPS / AF vavue reset not to be harsh or anything but ive NEVER seen a set of plugs go from running like Cr*p to good like Dtx is talking about Izzinya (Message edited by izzinya on May 19, 2005) |

could be a loose plug wire or something like that though Izzinya |

It idles at 1100 rpm pretty consistantly, cold or warmed up. |

What would cause the TPS to go out of adjustment? |

I've seen reference to air/fuel value reset on other threads as well, can anyone tell me how this is done? also can this be done without any special diagnostic tools? Thanx dave |

When I removed the engine in my 9, I found that the front plug wire had actually rubbed part way through. You couldn't see it when the frame was on the engine. It caused all kinds of headaches as far as drivability and starting. |

Hey guys, I went to the dealer and had the TPS checked. The tech said it was alright, but the timing was a little off. He changed the timing (about 1 degree, I think) and everything seems to be running better. When I started her this morning, it was hanging about 900 rpm for the first 5-10 seconds, then as it slowly warmed up, it went up to 1100 rpm and was running good. I think the problem is solved. |
