Foxnews has the 2005 BRAC (Base Realignment And Closure) list up on the web. Bad news for me, my employer Southern Division Naval Facilities Engineering Command in Charleston, SC is toast. I went through this once already in 1993 when the Charleston Naval Shipyard was closed. I'm not whining, no doubt there is lots of "fat" in the DOD that should be cut. OTOH, there is a lot of politics in the process that often has more to do with it than saving money. Just wondering if any other BadWebbers are in the same boat as me... |

Well, I am stationed out of Little Creek, the Amphib base, adn I know that one isnt in danger... BUT, can you have a look to see if Naval Station Ingleside(Ingleside TX), is on the chop block, I know they have been talking about it for years... just kinda curious if its actually gonna happen.. Chase, Yep, Ingleside is toast too. We have done a lot of work there. So is NS Pascagoula, MS. |

Worked at Mare Island, left in 1994, and have never looked back. DOD was a good place to work, but I figured if I transfered to another facility I would be going though what you are now again. I was able to get an early out so that helped a lot. Good luck for whatever you decide to do. Private industry has been good to me, I now have been on my current job 10 years. |

Hacksaw, well, you definitely know how it is. Glad things worked out for you. I may be back out in the "real world" with you shortly. Jim, sorry to hear about your place. One thing about the government, it will take a while for this stuff to happen (~2-5 years I think is typical), and they have a lot of things to help you out: PPP list, re-training, VSIP's, and if all else fails, very good severance pay packages. Having been through this once with Charleston, I will offer this opinion and it is absolutely my opinion so take it with a large grain of salt: Don't waste a lot of time trying to figure out how to keep your place open. When the Charleston Naval Complex was BRAC'ed in 1993, we had two VERY senior senators and ~8,000 people who fought it tooth and nail and we had very good economic and military justification for it not happening. Millions was spent (i.e.- flushed down the toilet) trying to stop it and it was all for nothing. We would have all been a lot better off to have accepted it and moved on. It would have been a lot less stress on all of us and it would have saved millions of dollars. Charleston recovered pretty quickly from the closure and is more prosperous than ever. My present command is barely a blip on the radar (~500 people) so I don't think there will be much of a fight (if any) to keep us around this time. We are told we may have the opportunity to move to Jacksonville which is near where most of the work we do will be in the future, so that's one option I have already. |

MI people spend lots of money, and time trying to keep it off the list also. It still closed, I think it went to deaf ears. I thing is I don't miss Mare Island, but I do miss the people that I worked with. That was the hardest part. Whodom how many years do you have in? Captjim how many for you? |

Looks like Patrick Air Force Base is ok though. Good news for the Space Coast. |

Hacksaw, I've got 25 years, but I'm "only" 49 years old with 2 kids to get through college. I figure I need to work about another 10 years or so. Cataract2- It's interesting to see how wrong the "insider best guess" pre-BRAC lists were. Looks like Florida came through OK. |

Well at least you will have something coming in to supplement your salary until you can reestablish yourself if you can't transfer. Hopefully you won't have to. I was 44 when I left, took a big hit, but I had my health benefits which made it easier to take jobs that didn't offer benefits. The company I work for now has benefits, but they pay me cash back since I don't need them. I also had to sent one son to college after I left. |

Ft. Knox, Kentucky was spared as my wife and I currently work for USAREC (United States Army Recruiting Command). USAREC is staying but they plan on moving the Armor School to Ft. Benning, GA. Hmmmm.... anyway, a few units are going to be moving to Ft. Knox. A lot of construction has been going on recently to include new housing where the Anderson Golf Course was if you "old timers" where ever station here and played that challenging course. |

I was stationed at Ft. Knox from 1987 through 1990 and played on the golf course a few times. Does that qualify me as an "old timer"? Bob |

Nope, nothing that fancy. Believe it or not, I was in the 113th Army Band which was part of the 12th cav regiment. Played for all the basic training grads and change of commands and whatever else the post commander wanted us to do. |

We actually gained five positions in Yuma, Az. I suppose we'll always be OK as we are one of the last open fire ranges... It's going to get crowded around here when Miramar finally closes... |

I just PCS'd, (moved, for all you civilians) to Fort McPherson, GA, which is in downtown Atlanta. I signed in Wednesday, and it came out on the list on Friday. Woohoo! Actually, we're deploying to Kuwait in August, and when we come back we're supposed to move to Fort Eustis, VA anyway. So when it comes down to it, it doesn't affect us at all. It's a sad thing when civilians lose their jobs, but at least there's more than a few weeks' notice. I don't expect that it till take anything less than a year or so to actually put this into motion, so that's good. Sean |

My base is being re-aligned. All our F-16's are going away. 9 to Ft Wayne IN and 6 to the graveyard. My job should be safe. Don't know what our mission will be now that we won't have F-16's??? |

It'll be the F-22 or the JSF... Which do you want to re-train on??? The only threat to my job is the Marine Corps civilianizing it. I think Crash Crew will always be though. They can civilianize the station billets, but they'll need Marines to go fight the wars... (Message edited by charlieboy6649 on May 15, 2005) |
