Lornce, Yes, the fairing sides were extended about 4.5” at the bottom and 5.5” and the top. At the same time I rolled the sides inboard at the top to flow with the tank cover. In addition the bottom of the fairing was cupped about an inch due to the lowering of the bike, and the windshield was mounted to the inside. When I was done with the external shaping I poured two-part expanding urethane foam over the interior, shaped it, then sealed it with a couple layers of glass. That is what gives it the nice radiuses. The inspiration for the look of this fairing came from the retro Ducati MH 900e, where it became part if the fuel tank. The inside of that unit was as much a work of art as the outside lines. I would have loved to “float” the whole S2 fairing off the body without a sub frame, but I could not bring myself to mess or loose the leading edge to the tank cover. There is a lot of things going on in the back also; after the body was bonded into one piece, the solo mold added, the ZX-11 taillight was fitted. Narrowing and tapering the body to the smaller taillight while maintain body proportions and avoiding a humped back look, required the tail to be sectioned and lengthened. Two inches in length was added to the tail about tree inches forward of the stock taillight opening. This allowed the solo section to taper gradually to the light without a ledge. When that was completed, a one-inch to zero wedge was cut from the length of the tail section. The cut was one inch wide horizontally through the taillight vent area and followed the body crown as a pie cut decreasing to zero just below where a stock tail fastens to the tank cover.

S2pengy, the kickstand is from a CBR900RR and I welded a piece of 1/4 flat steel to the back of it so it supports the bottom, looks like a L bracket, drilled a hole for the primary adjuster to go through. Then I had to spread the bolt holes and re-weld it to bolt it to the primary.

I saw some S1's at Harley Talledaga Al. test facilities in 96 at a HOG open house that had the same type of kickstand setup. When I asked about it they said it caused primary leakage and they had also had a primary case failure due to stress... I figured that was why it never made production |

Rex: The CF tank protector came from Fast Company (according to the label on the inside). It was on the bike when I bought it. rt |

Rickie, you're right. I shouldn't rush this project, might as well do it right! Let's see, flush mount the fairing, that oughta be pretty simple, just bond a couple of bolts into the glass, then smooth over. Hidden turn signals? You bet, should thought of that myself... Maybe I'll bond the tank cover and tail section while I'm at at. As long as I've gotta prime it again anyway, how much work can it be? Thanks again for the help! rt |

Rickie, You're scaring me! I've seen that bike in person and I'm embarrased at how many details I overlooked. Very nice stuff. I'll call you but I'm not sure I have your full name (starts with an "M" if memory serves). Brad |

S2pengy, I heard about those early S1's with my type of kickstand and I never had a primary leak or case failure, I've been running the same primary cover for 6 years, I did swap out the bolts with 4" ones though. (Message edited by azbueller on May 02, 2005) |
