Well my exhaust manifold right where it exits the rear cylinder is turning bright red. It gets so hot it's actually melting the black plastic frame protector right above it. I know it could be cause by many things but I'm thinking it's either the 02 sensor, or ignition timing may be off. I'm going thru the 5,000 mile maintenance procedures, changed plugs, cleaned K&N, change motor and trans oil. Bike has the Buell Race kit, muffler, race ECM, K&N. Anyone else ahve this kind of issue before? The manual says i need the diag software package to set the static timing. Where can if find it? Also will it do data logging so i can see what the A/F ratio is, etc I'll do some searching on here when I have time. Well back to work i go (Message edited by firewhirl on April 29, 2005) |

I'd check the static timing. Retard too far and the mixture will be burning in the pipe. (Message edited by craigster on April 29, 2005) |

my front pipe ran red hot also, xb12r, racekit, brought it to a dealer, said its fine, checked a/f ratio, ect... after a couple thousand miles on her, no longer glows red.... |

How does the bike run? Bluing is one thing, but glowing red sounds pretty serious. You usually need a breakout box or the Digital Technician to check the voltage reading while rotating the timing plate. Also, how do your plugs look? |

Well the bike runs sorta okay. The rpm's do not come down to idle most of the when coming to a stop. The idle does eventually go back to around 1,000rpm mark. Seems like the gas mileage is also suffering, can't. When it starts to get really hot in bumper to bumper traffic it sometimes get a reverse surging affect(rpm's go down after launching) when I take off, then the rpm's go back to it's current throttle position. The plugs did not look too bad. The rear plug did have very little black carbon on it, front was really clean. So the Digital Technician is what is used to check and set TPS, static timing, log data on runs, check A/F ratio? |

Could be an intake leak form the runability symptoms you mentioned. Could be something more serious, depending on how many miles you have on the bike and how long you've been running it in this condition. The Digital Technician is a PC/Software package that does really cool pinpoint diagnostics. Some dealers still use the Scanalyzer, which is a proprietary box that isn't quite as sophisticated, and sometimes requires a breakout box (like static timing) for certain functions. I try to use the DT whenever I need to do EMS related troubleshooting of resets when working on customer bikes. I'd really have a dealer look into this. Be as specific with the symptoms when you bring it up to the service writer at your servicing dealer. Hope nothing serious is wrong with your scoot. Moose |

When did you notice the bike running hot? My headers, both the front and rear cylinder were glowing red when I got home but I also parked for the first time in the dark, I also have not had my TPS reset or air fuel set in about 6,000 miles. |

Noticed it one day when the bike was sitting at idle. I was standing there chatting when i notice smoke coming from the rear exhaust manifold pipe area. It was melting the black plastic frame protector right above it. I also noticed that this morning when I left my house it ran fine for at least 15 minutes. Not hot, went right to idle when i came to a stop at the lights. But then it started acting up again. (Message edited by firewhirl on May 05, 2005) |

The Digital Technician is a dealer tool, not available for the general public. If you were able to purchase it, the whole setup on laptop is upwards of 10 large I think. Sorry. Your best bet is to have a dealer take a look at it. But, as the 2005 ECMs are now re-flashable, there may be a PC/Software tool available in the near future like the H-D EFI Race Tuner. |

Are you saying we have no choice when checking the static timing other than to bring it to a dealership? Also, i really took a good look at the pipes at night. Both the front and back are glowing red. |

Well I also just found out what the lap is that I saw on for a few seconds, it's the check engine lamp. I need to find out what code was thrown. |
