X1 -- cams produce power further up the rev range, more forward-leaning ergos, and fuel injected M2 -- cams with more torque lower down, more "standard" ergos (think Triumph Bonnie, if your old enough to remember), and carb now that they are older scoots, the biggest diff, to me, is that, with a carb, the M2 is a bit easier to service, requiring less dealer interaction that the FI on the X1 (no TPS reset, for instance) there are some that will swear that one or the other is better -- but it soon resembles a religious debate, where faith is the deciding factor -- ride both, make up your own mind ;-} |

I've been real happy with my m2, I test rode a 99 m2 and x1 almost back to back. Handling was pretty much the same. I did not like the cams on the x1, preferred the low end power on the cyclone to the hp gain on the x1. To me everything else was cosmetic, really like the x1 looks and helmet lock, available colors... either bike can be modified if you want it differnt but I wanted the m2 as a platform. -Mike |

Personally, I would think about what I wanted to do with the bike and then compare that to Bomber's comments. I bought an X1 for the style, power and handling and am very pleased with it. Yet, that is all subjective as the M2 folks did the same. Concerning the low end grunt, I don't really notice it as mine is set up to compensate for it. As far as the high end rush, I seldom see it as I usually run between 2.5k and 4.5k rpm's (the sweet spot begins at 3.0k) and work the gear box. Both bikes dance well in the twisties as Bomber and I have done quite a few rides together and are amazed at how well both our bikes handle them. One of Bombers favorite discoveries is that Buell's appear to have been made for Wisconsin's rather unique roads (read: twisty with lots of surprises) and I can't agree with him more. Ergo wise, the forward lean of the stock bars on the X1 is fine but that is easy to change. Clip-on's, MX and dirt track bars are among the common choices. I put a Triumph Bonnie replica bar on mine and am quite satisfied as it gives me both an upright, tucked in and everywhere in between position with superb leverage to flog the tight stuff. Bottom line...get what fits. You can't go wrong with either. |

Phoneman...I hope you like tight turns on rough pavement covered with sand, gravel, tar and road kill. PS: Nice X1 in your profile pic! (Message edited by Outrider on April 29, 2005) |

I am just kidding about the girl bike comment. I have ridden both M2 and X1. IMO on the M2 I sit more upright almost like riding a dirtbike and on the X1 I am a little more hunched over. I am also 6' 5" so that may make a difference. Also some people have had a LOT of problems with the X1 just ask Dyna about his. The M2 does not have fuel injection so if you have a screwdriver you can adjust the carb. It all depends on what fits you the best (Message edited by phonemanjustin on April 29, 2005) |

I agree w/ outrider.. It all depends on what you want the bike for, and your skill. I origonally got my X-1 cause it looked nicer (to me) than the M2, now i just see only difference is carb vs. FI, cause Spidy rides an M2, and his skills as a rider far surpass myown, so he can pull away from me easily. of course his M2 is HIGHLY modified. lol |

Phoneman...Just teasing ya! Michigan roads pretty much parallel the good riding roads here. Just watch out for Bomber or he'll own your bike. LOL Am painfully aware of Dyna's final problem but it appears to effect the M2's as well as other Tubers. Heck, Reepicheep wrote the book on the situation based on his experience with his M2. Still, must be a small percentage of bikes effected or Buell would have done a recall, eh? Ewww...that statement could open up a huge can of worms. Gulp... |

Blackbelt...If Spidy is as rough on women as he is on Old Mary Jane, I have a feeling that he will be single well into his senior years. LOL |

The M2 does not have fuel injection so if you have a screwdriver you can adjust the carb. My only complaint, moving from a Blast to an M2 is that the M2 runs like crap when it's warming up. I've wondered if FI fixes this? |

JL -- well, the blast is carbed as well, so you can't blame the M2's cold-bloodedness on it's carb'd status -- I've gone thorugh mine pretty well, and it's much better than stock, but still cranky when it first wakes up (like many folks I know ;-} ) a buddy with a really slow-waking M2 discovered that it had acquired a completly wrong slow jet somewhere in it's wanderings -- if there's a doubt what your's might be, take a look at it (but, knowing you, you've already done that ;-} )} The M2 does not have fuel injection so if you have a screwdriver you can adjust the carb. also MIS-adjust (grin) -- I learned from an engineer long ago that if there was a user-adjustable feature on a product, it would be user mis-adjusted as often as adjusted |

"the M2 runs like crap when it's warming up." My 2000 M2 was cold-blooded too until I installed a Factory kit and adjusted the mixture screw 2 1/2 turns out. Runs fine during start-up. |

MIS-adjust is sooooo true. I remember helping a friend set up a dual carb on an 440 chrysler wow that was fun. As for the FI and cold starts in my experience yes. I start my bike and by the time I put on my helmet and gloves I am ready to go. |

Everybody gripes about the TPS reset dealer thing. It's a 10 minute stop at a dealer when you change exhaust and once it's done, it's done, and it's right. You don't have to screw with this jet and that screw and running lean or nothing, it's right. I love my X1. |

Jim, I believe that after you dump the stock exhaust and bread box your warm up time will be reduced. You should start your eBay shopping now for the necessary parts. You know how to reach me if you have any issues. Greg |

Part of the reason your M2 may "run like crap" when cold may be due to the stock CV-40 (I'll assume) you're running. A lot can be done to make the CV40 run better; the BEST thing you can do to it is chuck it in the gravel and install a Mikuni. That notwithstanding, before I got to that point, I did the Thunderslide which helped IMMENSELY with the cold performance/"Keihin Cough" issues. The HSR, however, is head & shoulders (IMHO) above the CV in terms of throttle response and tuneability. It's your money, though. Just my .02. |

M2 has plastic tank made of same material as X-1 tank. X-1 does have a cover though and some like the look of the X-1 without it... |

My X1 Cell is too ugly to try to paint. besides if you had a plethora of covers you could change the cover from time to time just like changin' clothes
