These heads feature 1.810" intake and 1.580" exhaust valves, the same size as Thunderstorm, but with 7mm stems for additional weight savings. A single beehive style valve spring controls each valve, further reducing weight at the critical top end of the spring which sees the most movement. The springs measure about 135lbs at 1.850" installed height when new. A new improved valve guide seal design is used as well. There is plenty of retainer-to-guide seal clearance and coil bind clearance to allow up to .550" of valve lift, a full .050" more than the earlier heads, opening up the possibility of using higher lift cams*. The heads use a bathtub style 62cc chamber with flat squish bands. At stock 1200 bore and stroke, this chamber provides approximately a 10:1 compression ratio with flat tops. The XB and 2004 XL1200R heads are identical in every way except the finish and the breather holes, which are already drilled and tapped on the 1200R heads but not on the XB heads (the XB heads already have the boss, however).

Next year sportys will be injected. Even now when you hook up the scanylizer it says EFI detected. We just finished a Killer 2005 XL1200C at work....ET Stage 3 heads, 551 cams, buell XB9 Pistons, Screamin Eagle cylinder studs and head gaskets. Yeah it should MOVE!!!

With all this information, I've got a question.
Is it possible to build a motor with the XL883
bore and the XB9 stroke, using strictly off-the-shelf parts?
Maybe an upgrade for the Blast? Or not.

I was thinking the same thing, but you would be building a smaller displaced engine, requiring more rev's and less power. Blast is a 3.5 bore, I would think if anything, put the XB12 crank into the blast with a Blast or XB9 piston would make more grunt.

Process is called "gumballing" or some similar term. Think of putting your nickel in the gum ball machine. . . bikes (Buells coming down the line, Euro, USA, Aus, Japan, Fr, D, etc) do the same thing.

Basically: mix'em up, make the folks on the line LOOK and what they are building. Build by skill, not rote. Long story, powerplant ACC waiting for me, but you get the idea.

You think HD bought Buell to make money in the motorcycle business, eh? Splain that to me. Picture yourself as young Erik Buell struting into the offices of America's cash richest corp and telling them you are there to hep them make money sellign motorcycles. If you were Teerlink, how much would you have been willing to pay for that.

On the other hand.....jot down what you think the nominal cost of the following is:

1) Cost of trying something very innovative, having it go belly up and having to recall/replacee every unit on one of the 5,000 Buells you made in a year.

2) 1) Cost of trying something very innovative, having it go belly up and having to recall/replacee every unit on one of the 150,000 Sportsters you made in a year.

I went through college on a gymnastics scholarship. Whenever I was practicing a new, like a back double with a full-in/full-out, I'd start by tossing it from a 3M board or into a pit.

Buell, quite literally, is the pits.

There....I've given you one of the 9 elements. You now have the mindset to go forth young Jedi.

If you buy the motorcycle thing, call Bill Gates and tell him you can show him how to make money.

Not a cold shower at all - look at the bright side. Being both the test rat and the lab technician, Buell has much more leeway to play and try out new things. Sounds good to me : )

But then I always was a half-full kinda guy : D

the great news is that HD has figured out how to generate revenue directly from their lab work!

and, if things keep going the way they are, they could actually turn a profit on their lab . . . .

I thought Harley funded the XB's motor for research for their new sportster. So basically it the same motor but different. For what its worth.

What Court said, except I don't think they have ever produced 150,000 XL's in one year. 69,821 were produced in 2004.

You are correct. I meant the number to illustrate the example, I should have so stated.

Harley-Davidson needs to turn a corner. Wise thinkers within the organization recognized the threat posed by corporate myopia/inertia. I'm not sure Newton listed it but, trust me on this, "a corporation in motion, making unprecedented profits and generating tremendous profits, tends to stay in motion and risks being blinded to the evolving technology and market place it operates in".

Harley-Davidson is going to HAVE to eventually do some things that Harley-Davidson people don't know how to do. This is not a bad thing. They do what they do better than anyone in the world. Bear in mind that the stock Pops bought, each $1,000 worth of it, is worth $150,000 per M this week. You;d keep doing the same thing to.

Wise thinkers, and they have both names and balls, fought to get Buell on board. They understood the principle of negative transfer of knowledge (look it up in any elementary Psych textbook) and knew why the USMC trained their best snipers from folks who had never touched a gun before.

To understand what Buell does, you must understand what Buell is.

I see future as brilliant for both Harley-Davidson and Buell.
