How about writing about an actual ride you went on, or a trip you are planning & knock off all the accident reporting, this isnt your local ABC news. Dyna...Excellent suggestion! |

Koz...Just can't get it in me to back any further legislation concerning restrictions, but I understand your point about starting small and working your way up the HP, Torque and Weight scale. Note I intentionally did not reference Cubic Centimeters as there are many large CC bikes with low HP and Torque numbers. Evidence, any HD/BMC product in comparison to other type bikes. Additionally, it is my personal gripe that insurance rates are based on CC's and not type of bike, real world performance factors and value. To me, it is all in the individual riders psychological make up. In essence, knowing your own limitations and acting accordingly. Not to mention, being aware of one's responsibilities to the law and the other folks sharing the road. Quite simply, just because one bought the power doesn't mean they have to use it at least not until they have learned to handle it. Personally, I feel the Buell 1200 Tubers and XBS models are great bikes to learn on when you consider their rheostatic power delivery. Easy to dial the power in and out to meet the circumstances and no sudden leap into "Warp Speed" when you hit the Magic RPM level like many In-Line 4's have. Just an opinion and as always everyone is entitled to theirs. Fortunately, I don't have to sweat any new legislation concerning licensing compliments of my age and years riding. The only legislation that concerns me are the one's that take away or restrict my freedoms and God knows folks my age have lost enough of them over the years. In reading this over, I realize it is a pretty weak argument in light of contemporary values concerning entry level riders, but I decided to post it anyway for the sake of being a contrarian. |

Guys, what it all boils down to is this; either we continue on the course of making each person responsible (and liable) for his/her own behavior and the resulting actions, or we let the "Mother Hen" state mandate what we *shall* do...sort of like the current helmet laws in many states. I wouldn't dream of riding without a skid lid. I've seen and read the results far too often. Yet, every day I ride past guys/girls on all kinds of bikes with shorts, tank tops and gym shoes...oh maybe a dewrag once and a while. You can't make people not be stupid. As with small children, you sometimes have to hope they will fall down and not get hurt. If Mother Hen steps in, YOU BET YOUR LIFE that bikes will eventually be out of the picture. Our best bet is to educate new/potential riders as to what can happen...and make it stick. I bet some rider who's seen his buddy splattered alongside an oak tree has learned a valuable lesson he'll never forget. It's just sad that sometimes that's what it takes. |

Skydivers & HangGlider pilots can read monthly in the USPA & USHGA magazines, accident reports. Learning from the mistakes of others has improved equipment & training beyond belief. Motorcyclists seem not to have such a feedback system. (though "riders edge" & other programs are great ) But, after more than a century, we know that: the oncoming guy who turns left ( in the US, right in UK ) in front of you, never saw you. Most single vehicle accidents involve alcohol. The rest of them involve bad judgment, without the booze. 18 year old idiots on 1000 + cc bikes, are the prime source of fresh organs in non helmet law states, and skin graft recipients in helmet states. YMMV IMHO etc. |

The National Spelelogical Society publishes an annual accident report which outlines every known caving accident and rescue (or lack of) in the USA and world beyond. Perhaps the AMA should pursue a similar publication? Rob |

It's funny how everyone has endless stories of motorcycle mahem...yet there are far more people involved in car accidents who never talk about it. |

Late to chime in here (now that I'm working again, I can't camp out online) This month's issue of AAA "Westways" magazine has a feature article on deadly street-racing (I'm in the AAA for towing, NOT their insurance so don't ask) They did a pretty good writeup all things considered. Unfortunately, we can only self-police so far when the population of bike riders is so LARGE. Self-regulation CAN work. As long as the activity in question is really only affecting the individuals and NOT the other tax-paying citizens. SCUBA is a good example. You need training and a certification card before you can dive on a boat, get air fills etc. You need another card if you want exotic gasses. Government aint sayin nuttin - but when you F**K up, it's your own butt in the sling - it's not like you're gonna sink the boat if you screw up. Problem I see is the hand-wringing, bed-wetting namby-pamby compassion police are hearing of too many soccer-moms who are ending up with meat-filled hood ornaments. I see the population of sportbikers as too large a population - even if 99+% police themselves, there is still a large group of idiots out there doing "squidly" stuff on the streets. I hate to say this but if peer pressure doesn't work, we're gonna bend over and brace ourselves for insertion of more laws. |
