Last weekend 28 people were ticketed in Kaukauna,83.00 each. The fine in Green Bay,I'm told, for loud pipes is 220.00 and you have 10 days to fix it. |

Any clue as to what their definition of loud pipes is or are they just using the fine to harass folks? Is a very good reason why I would like a Stealth Performance Pipe. Looks like I had best get some new packing in my Vance Hines, eh? |

I wonder if a stock WileyCo will pass roadside inspection. |

Last weekend a lady on a bike showed me her ticket. It wasn't necessarily for being loud. It was for not being stock. Anything aftermarket will get you a fine. The cop also gave her a photocopy of whatever law she broke. It didn't mention anything about the noise. |

ok that is a bit odd... so there is a law on the books in WISCONSIN!! HOME OF HD that says you can't have anything aftermarket? well that is messed up.. |

Maybe they're playing the EPA card. Could be a warmup for things to come. Kind of interesting if so that they're starting in a region not requiring smog checks for cars, unless that is a smog check zone. Hope they don't start ticketing for aftermarket air filters since the stock ones are also a compliance component. (Let's see, I think I still have the stock box for one bike, the other is similar enough to not hopefully matter.) The CrudRun could get interesting this weekend if I make it there. |

Start buying up stock exhausts at swap meets, ebay, and dealer clearance items. Stock pipes may become valuable like gold if this is true. |

Anything aftermarket will get you a fine heh, our OEM mufflers have already been misidentified by LEOs from their placement alone. |

Kandie is right, they aren't writing the ticket for loudness(at least in Kaukauna). Anything other than OEM is illegal. |

This can't be for real, has anyone got a hold of the facts. Get copies of the law and maybe tickets which were issued based on this law and then contacted someone like your local governor, mayor, chief of police or who ever to verify this. How about notifying the AMA (American Motorcyclist Association). It is discrimination if they only pull over motorcyclists. I'll agree there should be a law on sound levels, not aftermarket exhaust systems. Who cares how you get the sound as long as it does not exceed the allowable limit. I like stealth; if I want to get on it, I do not need to alert any police in the area by the sound of a loud exhaust. |

Dave that law has always has been in affect in Wisconsin.Just depends on the State,City,Township or the officer on duty on how much he wants to push the issue.Hell all they have to do is park down the street from your work and write up 30 or more on Saturday afternoon just coming and going. They'll fill there quota's quick. |

Your exhaust is part of the EPA compliance system, it is against Federal law to mess with it. So is the airbox, but it was ugly and big and huge and got in the way and other stuff. Just wait until they start ticketing all the choppers and customs that were built with old Buells. Anybody got a stock air filter assembly for an S2 for cheap? Any condition as long as it's stock. Rerouting the rocker box breather lines is also a violation if one wants to get technical about it. Just like at work, I don't make the rules, I just get punished by them. Gonna be a hot summer.

I dont think there are enough old breadboxes in the world to get all the Buells in compliance. I do have my stock pipe though. |

I got a ticket in Minnesota for loud exhaust. The cop stood about 2 feet from my pipes and told me to get on it. Didn't have any type of measuring device, just his big ears. Said "that's too loud" and wrote the ticket. I can't remember exactly but I think it was close to $200. |

"Just like pulling the tag's off a mattress.LOL" Dang, okay, I think they're still in the burn barrel out back. I'll go fish them out, wash off the kerosene and diesel starting fluids, and sew them back onto the mattress. Stupid satellite cameras anyway, can't get away with nothin' no more. |

Dana is right. Heck, it is a Federal EPA law that the States had to include in their laws in order to maintain their Federal funding for roads construction and repair. Of interest, it is easier to make a ticket stick for Non-OEM Equipment than for Excessive Noise. The later would require sound measuring devices (or neighbors complaints) to hold up in court. Therefore, it appears this is just a quick source of revenue and is possibly a result of community concern about noise pollution. Additionally, these reports come from an area that is 100 to 150 miles north of Milwaukee. I have not heard of any tickets like this being issued down here yet, but time and future posts will tell. Unfortunately for most Bueller's, if the LEO's really got into our bikes we'd all be walking home. That's the reason Harley and Buell mark their Non-EPA stuff "For Race Use Only." Probably, the best cure is to ride quiet in the cities and let 'er rip when you are alone in the country. Then you just have to watch out for the County Mounties and the Highway Patrol. |

They don't need a decibal meter to prove its to loud. All they need to see is the proper tags saying that the exhaust meets EPA regulations.BTW The Drummer doesn't qualifie (Message edited by bads1 on April 26, 2005) |

Just wait until they start ticketing all the choppers and customs that were built with old Buells. Mike...Interesting point. I believe that manufacturer's with annual production below a certain level are exempt from the Federal Law. If True, it might be argued that our Tubers were manufactured before HDI owned more than 49% of Buell and that Buell's annual production was below the required level. Might be worth pursuing to prove a point but I think I will just look for a stock muffler. Damn, now I wish I hadn't sold mine. Oh well, I really don't feel that bad as the deal was that the Buyer donate the purchase price to Alex Prior's Cancer ride last summer. |

That's the reason Harley and Buell mark their Non-EPA stuff "For Race Use Only." Wouldnt that be great to have the dealer install a new $500 screaming beagle exhaust & then get a ticket as you leave the dealership? Personally I think its all a load of crap & is up to a cops discretion. If they are having a bad day or its near the end of the month..note what day it is right now...then you have more chances of getting nabbed. |

Outrider, Actually, there are no exemptions for small manufacturers. That's an old wives tale brought out by chopper builders so they can convince their customers everything is OK. |

We have been warned over and over. The AMA has been publishing ads for over 2 years now about loud pipes. Isn't New Mexico doing something simular? Now if the "stealth" pipe that was seen testing was available..... If its gonna be that way I guess I ride the Road Glide more , it's stock and stayin that way. The Buell will be for track and country rides maybe til the "stealth" muffler comes out. |

Amen Dyna...But I have the feeling I have a better chance of getting through Kaukauna at night than you do on our respective Wide Glides. LOL Then again, you will win hands down on a R1 to Buell basis. Gulp! |
