What the heck happened to your engine? What exactly needed to be rebuilt? I'm approaching 30k on my 2000 M2 and your post worries me. I haven't babied my bike at all except for maintenance, and it's seems to be running fine. Darn, another thing to fret about... | ||

I just pulled my 96 S-1 down at 48,000 miles for a look see and other than the cylinders being .0025 out of round and the valves needing grinding everything looked ok. However as I have a new set of Thunderstorm heads on the shelf I am putting them on along with the matching JE pistons.I have had these for a couple of years now and I just couldn`t see tearing down a perfectly good running engine until I had a head gasket starting to weep on the back cylinder. One thing that bugs me is the front head where the quench chamber is cast in is deeper on one side than on the other so I am going to machine it correctly and make the rear head match so I have the same quench and compression on both cylinders.I have been curious to try these as they flow about 15 cfm more than the stock heads that I removed and everyone used to rave about them until the XB heads came out. So I guess I am behind the times again but at least the top end will be fresh again. Ed | ||

As near as my mechanic can figure it was an oiling failure problem, either the oil pump partly failed or some other sort of problem it interrupted the oil flow at speed burnt up my valves and sent metal valve shavings throughout the engine. One in a million according to him. Just another interesting owner story about those Buells. Art..... | ||

Art, If you have shavings throughout your engine it is something other than your valves. I can buy the oil system failure as some of the 98 and 99 Buells and sportsters had problems with the oil pump drive and driven gears going away and causing the engine to destroy itself and this sounds like what happened to you. I had a customer with a 98 S-3 that had this happen to him a couple of years ago and we had to replace the rods and pin, the oil pump, pistons and rings and as long as we were at it we put in oversize valves in the heads. Be sure to flush your oil tank, replace the lines and clean the cases thoroughly as there are many places for crud to hide in there. Ed | ||

Ed, That's pretty much what I thought also. When I do the rebuild I will remember about the oil tank and lines, thanks. I'm leaning towards the NRHS 1250 bolt on with stage 2 heads. I already have the race ecm, force winder intake, wileyco slip on and the spurgin oil cooler. I also have another set of body work, just need the fairing and I will have a complete 2nd set. I am going to hate not riding this year but I hope the results will be worth it. Art..... | ||

The oil pump drive gear can be checked for about $5 worth of consumables (gasket, teflon tape, and cable ties) and about 25 minutes of your time during your next oil change. Doing this saved my Cyclone's engine. | ||

I'd highly doubt that's hitting the showroom floor, unless it's built custom by a dealership for their local market. Harley tried the dirt bike game, I don't think they're going back anytime soon apart from sponsorship of sorts for flat track events. It looks like an early S1 with the small tank and early swingarm with added on rear shock mounts. I'd be real curious to see how they did the upper rear shock mounts. | ||

I think you might be wrong about this although..one can never be absolutly sure about this kind of thing. Being part of the adventure riders group we monitor all the rummors about possible big trailes that might be coming down the pike. We have been getting snippets of info on this bike for several years including a few quotes from Mr. buell himself. This pic may only be of a test mule or something...but I someting is coming...and soon. It really makes sense for Buell to do this. The Dual sport and ADV bike market is very hot right now and the timing would be perfect. | ||

On second thought....you might be right about this bike...Buell would probably do a better job of it. Dinky little swingarm...and dual lay down shocks...probably to oldschool for Mr. Buell. The next few months will be interesting. | ||

Just a quick stop to say Hey to everyone. I'm sitting in Camp Fallujah, Iraq. Doing pretty good. It's April 26th, my time. I am now a 2yr old BadWebber as of today. Two years ago as of today. Dangit, can't go celebrate with a ride so somebody do me a favor and enjoy a nice ride for me  . Blake, the wife said I got my calendar. It's waiting at my house for me when I arrive there. I'll be home on leave in June and I'll pick it up and bring it back to Iraq with me. Ya'll all take it easy, ride safe, and enjoy those Buells. | ||

So you think they'll reuse the '98 tube-frame and throw the exhaust over the frame on the right side again? They might need to add a muffler, or at least include asbestos underwear since you'll be sitting on the exhaust tip. Interesting implementation of the pre-01 shifter also. | ||

Sorry about posting this in the GD board. No luck in the paint and bodywork area or searching. Does anyone know what the frame color is called on my 1998 S3T (Spark Red bodywork). I've seen the code charts in the Knowledge Vault, but I'm not sure which to go with. It appears to be a "medium" gray of some sort. I need to do a little freshening up on it. Thanks! Steve | ||
