OK, today on a short errand, had some problems starting the bike after getting some groceries.

Mind you, when I start the bike, I never blip the throttle or anything like that. I've only managed to put a few hundred km on it so far...it's still virtually brand new.

Anyway, I came out of the store and started the bike--all seemed fine until I tried to ride off, but as soon as I let out the clutch even a tiny bit the bike stalled. It ran rough if I gave it gas; I started it several times, same result. The "check engine" light was staying on for a few seconds each start, but even once it went off, no go. Fuel pump was working--I could hear it. I tried starting it and shutting it off with the kill switch, as I had read here something about shutting it off with the key leaving the fuel system pressurized.

After about half a dozen starts/shutdowns, it finally ran fine, as if nothing had happened. Could this problem be related to simply shutting it off by the key rather than the kill switch? (I can't recall how I shut it down before going into the store) Annoying...

It does sort of sound like the kickstand switch might be causing the problem - the 03's still have them (I know this from experience). If the kickstand is up, then the switch might be bad. I too use the kill switch to shut my bike off.

My 03 does not seem to have a kickstand switch--I wish it did! I am used to Japanese bikes with the switch (which, BTW, would kill the bike as soon as you put it into gear, not when you try to ride away).

AS it was, I did kick up the stand on the off chance there was a switch--but I gotta say, I can't find any evidence of one.

No, I'm sure the problem had to do with the EFI system somehow, as it involved the "check engine" light. This is my first EFI bike, normally it runs flawlessly--but that's what I'd expect of a new bike.

Not trying to highjack the thread, but is the kill switch the correct way to shut off the bike?

I have been using the key...Sorry, I'm new to the Buell way...

OK, I checked TFM, and yes, my bike DOES have a sidestand interlock! (I see it now) Works differently from the ones I'm used to--my Yamaha will kill the engine if it is in gear with the sidestand down, never mind that the clutch is in. Hopefully that is the extent of the problem.

Thanks Jan and Paulson...

(BTW, crow ain't so bad...a little chipotle sauce, and it's OK...)
