All -- I am trying to get the springs back into the WP forks I've acquired (97 S3) after added the requisite amount of fork oil to the little dears --

the manual states that it is a two person job, wherein one person holds up the damper to keep it from sinking into the depths of the fork, while the other "compresses the spring"

reminds me of that cartoon in which the mathmatician, having written sqaure yards of complex formulae on the black board, ends his travails by writing, "and a miracle occurs!"

anyways, I digress (constantly) -- can anyone tell me how to get the springs back into the forks, with or without the assistance of a second pair of hands?

thanks!

well, I wrap a wire around the top of the damper rod, fish it thru the spring, drop the spring in, then pull the damper rod up with the wire. I guess if you don't have a second pair of hands, you could do the same thing and tie the wire to the ceiling to hold it up while you compress the spring and slide in the keeper.

It's easier with another pair of hands. Buy a 6 pack. Call a friend.

Bomber; I bought a spring compression tool from Traxxion dynamics. It's at the bottom of the picture here:

http://traxxion.com/store/product_pages/products.tools.asp

The round thing with the 2 handles. My guess is something like it could be manufactured in the entropy lab using PVC drain pipe and some threaded rod?

The "round thing" is slid over the spring/damper rod and the 2 handles are screwed in until they catch the spring. Pushing down on the handles will then compress the spring.

On second thought - maybe PVC pipe may not be strong enough - black plumbing pipe drilled and tapped?

And now that I've typed up this lengthy explanation, I realize they have it in pictures on the Traxxion site:

Oh well ... : )

H -- first, welcome back -- hope you had a great time --

second, thanks fo the tip -- looks like a pretty ez tool to make (slapping self in head, thinkin about all the rube goldberg-like devices spinning in the design center also know as my forebrain)

this'll be great -- those racoons get really cranky when pressed into service!

There's a little hole on the side of the damper rod. I used an allen wrench of the same size to stick in there and then thread the spring though it.
