(This is how its written, but I don't really understand what they're trying to say. ??)

NHTSA Campaign ID:  05V148000
Component:  Structure: Motorcycle Kickstand/Center Stand
Manufacturer:  Buell

Year:
2005
Make:
Buell
Model:
XB12S
Recall Date:
04/13/2005

Potential Number of Units Affected: 149
Manufactured:

Defect Summary:
On certain motorcycles, the sidestand may not retract as designed if contact is made with the ground when the vehicle is in motion.
Consequence Summary:
This could, in turn, disrupt the stability of the motorcycle leading to a crash, causing death or injury to the rider.
Corrective Summary:
Dealers will replace the sidestand pivot bolt with a similar bolt that is .100 inch longer. This change will allow the sidestand to operate as designed. The recall is expected to begin during April 2005. Owners should contact Buell at 1-414-343-8400.

The sidestand on the XB's was designed so if you forget to put them up and you lean left a bit it will kick itself up. I've tested mine a few times on accident. Sounds like on those models there's a small problem. If you have an XB12S take it in to get fixed.

149 units. Thats really small. Wonder if someone forgot to adjust their torque wrench that morning or something.

well i thought this situation could not occure due to the sidestand switch fitted....the bike should not be able to drive off with sidestand down..... mine cuts out if this is tried

i take it this is not fitted to 05 xb12's then?

Perhaps what they really meant is this:

"On some models, the sidestand bolt is too short. This allows the stand to somehow deploy during riding, (spring pops loose?) unknown to the rider until he turns left and gets a surprise."

There are 3 notices posted, one for 2005 12S, 12R and 9SX, and they all say 149 units... more confusion.

That's a bad spot for a switch, proven by all the problems different bike makers have had with it. Making the stand flip up on drag is a great step forward. Having it do so requires some precise geometry tho. They are not saying the stand flops down wile riding instead that the bikes in question it will not flip up on dragging.

The low number would most likely be from a single lot of improper sized bolts that was delivered and installed on bikes.

After what I've seen of the way the Japanese makers have handled their recalls the last few years this just proves to me the much greater concern Buell has for it's customers.
The Japanese would have stalled forever and/or denied the problem.
Case in point, a friend with a Goldwing numbered outside the Great Frame Recall thought he was safe but Honda just finally extended the numbers to include his bike. They have known all along when they made the frame welding change! He (and many others) has been treated very sadly by Honda (Dealers & Corp.)
The way Buell handles it's problems compared to the other makers is a major selling point in my book.

OK, now I get it---its supposed to flip up and doesn't. Thanks Unibear.

(Only 149 bikes, that's got to be the world's tiniest recall) :-)

Sounds like nobody at the NHTSA ever owned a bike and fell prey to some dork(s) that forgot to raise their kickstand before taking off and doing the pole vault thing.

Trust me, I would rather have a stiff operating kick stand that stayed down rather than one of the switch blade variety that often retracted when the bike was bumped or moved slightly. Less chance of incurring either damage to the bike, yourself or an innocent bystander that way.

As always, YMMV.

Very true Outrider, but considering I live in the land of the lawsuit I understand why Buell has done what they've done. Sad.

They still should have included a safety switch for the stand. I've had the bike indicating neutral only to jump when I started it. Luckily I've always been able to get it just before it topples over. The starters on these things are quite strong. It may sound dumb but I've always in the past kicked my bikes over as I walk past in the garage to get my jacket and helmet so the first few times I was getting false neutrals fixed that. Maybe the stand will pop up when you bank left but there are other times when the bike shouldn't start while in gear. I'm seeing this "improvement" in line with an auto car that would start while in drive or reverse. To my knowledge this is the only road bike on the market without the sidestand switch.

Nothing like being stuck in the parking lot of a Catfish House in rural Arkansas on a Saturday night...on your shiney new red Ducati Monster.... with all the locals staring at you as you try to leave the parking lot, but can't because the side stand lockout switch has malfunctioned, killing the engine every time you release the clutch.

I don't believe Sportsters have a sidestand switch either, BTW.

Unibear says..."I live in the land of lawsuits."

No kidding. I got sued twice and sued somebody else once in the 1980's while living in Mission Viejo and I won all three. So, in my opinion, even though the concept sucks, either the system works or I just lucked out with three great juries.

Incidentally, I agree with you concerning Buell stepping up to the plate and handling the minor issue. They have always been good at that.

Hmmm, I've been starting the bike every time by standing next to it, fiddling around with the shifter 'till I get a green light, then just hitting the starter, no hand on clutch. Perhaps that is not such a good idea. Perhaps one of these days I'm gonna get a false green and hit the starter and knock the bike over. That will surely suck...

I guess the kickstand switch is for idiots like me. I always try to be safe when starting: get on bike, balance bike, turn on key, then ignition, pull clutch, start bike, warm up, shift into first, let out clutch, bike stalls, cuss at myself, put up stand, re-start.

??????
Note to prospective motorcycle operators: please raise sidestand fully before beginning forward motion of vehicle. After conclusion of motorcycle ride, and before dismounting, please stop engine, and lower sidestand. Thank you.

Hmmm...sidestand switch...my 03 doesn't have one. I kinda miss it--my previous bikes have had them, and I generally use it to kill the bike, for these reasons: you KNOW the sidestand is down, and the bike is in gear, ready to be parked. It's a no-brainer. When leaving, you KNOW the sidestand is up (I know, I know, but you only have to forget ONCE...).

Oh, well. Now, I have to get used to using the kill switch, as I've read here somewhere not to use the key.

I am concerned about the sidestand on my 2003 XB9S. I see no recall for it (only the XB9SL) but I don't see how this will not fail when the others (even newer models) fail.

I read about a solution using a shoulder bolt, but it is for the non-switch models.

Any suggestions?
