I live in coastal SC (hot & humid) and am looking for a recommendation for summer gloves for commuting and touring. I've worn Icon Tarmac mesh gloves the last couple of summers but they don't look like they'd offer a whole lot of protection in a crash and they aren't that comfortable either due to stitching in the palms. The two best candidates I've found so far are the "Rev'It" Hurricane mesh gloves (reviewed here: http://www.webbikeworld.com/r2/rev-it/summer-mesh-gloves/index.htm) and the Kushitani Bikers Mesh Glove II (shown here: http://www.kushitani.com/pro/0htm/glove_htm/k5023.htm}). Motorcycle Online did a review of these gloves a couple of years ago and raved about them. If anyone has any experience with either of these gloves or if you have other recommendations, I'd appreciate hearing about it. Thanks in Advance, Hugh |

Hugh, Last week in Home Despot I noticed a deerskin work glove marketed by Stanley that appeared ideal for summer riding. I tried on a few pairs and inspected the stitching fairly closely (ie: i put on a pair too small for me and made a fist to see if I could "stress" the seams) and they held up fine. Really nice quality deerskin leather. $29cdn closer to $25usd. Think I'm gonna get myself a pair for Christmas for next summer's hot, muggy weather. Deerskin's awesome in hot weather. Really wicks away the moisture to keep your hands comfortable, much better than cowhide. Better abrasion resistence, too. my $0.02 Lornce |

You might wanna try a set of ICON Super Duty shorty summer gloves. Good padding/feel and nicely cool for warm weather riding. |

I hadn't checked this thread in a LONG time, but thanks for the recommendations. I ended up buying a set of the Kushitani Bikers Mesh gloves. They're nice, but I find them pretty uncomfortable. They have exposed seams inside that seem to dig into my hands when they get hot. I like them OK, but I'm not satisfied considering what I paid for them (~$80 IIRC). I do wish I could find someplace that stocked the "Rev'it" gloves so I could try a pair on. (Message edited by whodom on April 15, 2005) |

I just got a set of ICON Tarmac 2.0 gloves and love them. They are goatskin palms with fabric & rubber padding on top. Great fit and good comfort, plus only $28 |

The two ICON gloves endorsed by M1a65 and Deltacruiser are good hot weather gloves, but you may find that they sacrafice too much protection in favor of flowing air. I find that the ICON Hooligan gloves flow sufficient air and have much more protection. ICON's corporate site is www.rideicon.com and you can get them at www.kneedraggers.com for a very good price. I am affiliated with neither. I just like ICON gloves and the guys at Kneedraggers are terrific to deal with. BTW, ICON gloves have run a size small in the past. I usually need size large but buy extra large when I get ICON gloves. You might want to ask if that's still the case if you order ICON gloves on line. |

Ara, thanks for the info. My previous summer gloves were ICON Tarmacs. They are definitely well-ventilated, but like you say I wasn't really convinced they'd hold up very well in a crash. The Hooligan gloves look pretty cool; I'll try to find a set of those to check out. I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm sure managing to accumulate quite a collection of gloves: COLD weather gloves, moderate weather gloves, hot weather gloves, rain gloves... |

I'm not ready to admit to a glove fetish, but yeah I've got three sets of ICON gloves (Hooligan, Ti, and Patrol), a set of AGV gloves, a set of Olympia gloves, and a set of MSR gloves. I think it's really important to wear gloves because of the instinct to put out your hands when you fall. I see lots of young squids riding hard without gloves and I wonder how you make a living when you've ground your hands to the bone. |

I'm not going to tell how many pairs of gloves I have. lets just say its proportional to how many bikes I have! I just bought some JRs mesh gloves from new enough for only $7.50 a pair. they still have a few left in XXL and small sizes. http://www.newenough.com/joe_rocket_phoenix_gloves_page.htm |

Seems like gloves are about second in importance after helmets. I have: Widder electric gloves (for COLD riding) Hein Gericke All Season gloves (for cold/wet riding) Olympia Gel Sport gloves (for normal weather/long distance riding, my favorite overall glove) Kushitani Bikers Mesh Glove II (for hot weather, nice but irritating) Icon Tarmac 2.0 gloves (for HOT weather, starting to look a little ragged after ~3 years) The Widder's are kind of bulky and cumbersome to hook up, so I only use them when its ~45 deg. F or below. When it's cold, there's no substitute for electric heat. The HG's are comfy from about 50 to 65, above that they get too hot. Unfortunately, this means I don't have a good hot weather rain glove. The Olympias work well from about 60 to 80 deg. F (as long as you're moving). The Kushitanis are comfy from about 75 to 90 as long as you're moving (sit still, your hands get sweaty and the seams feel like they "swell" and dig in). The Icons are good to have when it's 95 plus, especially when you're in traffic. |
