Well durring my trip to laconia my helemt officialy pissed me off. So Ive decided im gonna spring for a really nice helmet and have narrowed it down to 3. The Shoei x-11, Shoei rf-1000, or an Arai Quantum/f. If anyone has any experiance with one or more of theses helmets your input would be great. | ||

Shoei and Arai have different basic shapes to the internal liner. Your either an Arai guy or a Shoei guy. Try them on first. | ||

stainlessmag,i posted a question similiar to yours and got alot of responses.it was worded something like whats the helmet of choice amoung the babwebbers.if you can search for it.i'm sure you'll find it.seems like alot of people like hjc,shoei rf900 and 1000 and arai.the biggest thing is fit and comfort,wind noise and weight of helmet. | ||

i have 2 Buell helmets and they are pretty good, never had a complaint. I got both of them form the BUELL.com site. im pretty sure they are both AGV brand cuase i have seen the one that rossi wears and the vent holes, the look and shape are the same. even the way to chage the lenses on it. | ||

My personal opinion is that when you get to that level of helmet the fit becomes more important than anything else. Arai offers three different helmet "shapes" of helmets. The Quantum is considered to have a "round oval" fit, while the Signet has more of a "long oval" fit. Arai's Astral helmet offers an "intermediate oval" fit. I haven't found anything from Shoei indicating as much about helmet shape. I was told that Shoei's X-11 helmet was intended to be more of a race oriented helmet, offering a more snug fitment and different venting intended for higher speeds. I was also told that Shoei's ZII was designed to have a different shape/fit than Shoei's RF series, but I don't know how it differs. I personally use an RF900 and have been satisfied with it, but it does tend to fog up in colder weather. Mike | ||

The different model lines of Shoei all fit different. Just not broadcast like Arai is about fit. | ||

It sure would be nice to be able to use a "loaner" helmet to help in the buying decision. Sure... it's a good idea to try on a helmet and keep it on for a time while in the store. But that doesn't always tell you how it will feel in the long run. I had a Shoei (although brand doesn't matter) that seemed to fit great in the store, and in fact felt fairly decent for the first half hour of riding. It was during longer rides that I realized it was really pressing against my forehead... so much in fact that I sometimes got a headache from it! Guess my head is "oblong". Anyway... it would be nice to be able to tell what the helmet would feel like "in the long run" before buying. Considering the above, I feel manufacturers' recommendations (as to round, oval, oblong, square, whatever)are certainly helpful and I wish all would provide them. Steve | ||

For reference; at the MC show I was told by the Shoei Rep, that the X-11 and the RF1000 both are more oblong in shape. The X-11 more so than the RF. From trying on helmets at the show, the X-11 is quite similar in shape to the Arai Signet GTR - the X-11 having a touch more room at the sides than the Signet. Henrik | ||

Why not try a tourcross. Arai have produced it for supermotos. My x1 is a supermoto on steroids so I kinda think it works. Plus the venting and vision is second to none. | ||

Suomy spec1r,love it but ive always had Suomy helmets. Expensive but pretty quiet and doesnt fog up. Also the graphics are pretty darn cool | ||

I've got a couple thousand miles under my RF-1000,good venting and fit, not too heavy... the only time I had fogging issues was in a freezing rain/sleet/ wet snow storm that I probably shouldn't have been riding in anyways... | ||

i have used up rf700, couple rf800, an rf900, and am currently wearing out an rf1000. all very good quality helmets. | ||

I had to run with the Arai RX-7 Corsair .. the only one that would fit my cannon ball of a head nicely .. I am VERY pleased with it nice fit .. quiet ...  | ||

I had two Arai Signets in a row and loved both of them. My current lid is a Shoei Z-II which, to my complete surprise, fits just as nicely as the Signet. A number of years ago I bought an RF200 and wound up giving it away because, 40 minutes into a ride, I'd feel it pressing against my forehead and the back of my head. Even worse, I rode one day into a pretty strong headwind and wound up with an eye-crossing headache. The Z-II doesn't have that problem. | ||

I can't believe nobody on here has suggested "massaging" their helmets to fit. If after you purchase a helmet that fit perfectly in the store, you wind up with a hotspot or two, remove the liner and take a piece of sandpaper to the styrofoam to make a relief in the area of the hotspot. It shouldn't take much if the helmet did in fact fit right when you bought it. This does not degrade the helmets protection unless you are removing more than 10% of the material. I've had to do this to 2 out of the 3 helmets that I own and I expect that I'll have to do it to the helmets that I plan on buying this weekend. It's easy to do and makes for a MUCH more comfortable helmet and of course is cheaper than giving the things away only to take the gamble again with a new one. |
