OK. The XB9R has been leaking oil like it's free. Tracked it down to the 45 degree fitting that connects on the right side of the fuel pump. Now, on taking off the oil feed line to the cooler and the fitting itself, I see there is no teflon wrap. I figure that is at least part of the problem. However, when reattaching the fitting I find that it turns a good quarter turn (by hand) further than where it needs to in order to reattach the oil feed line properly. Since the fitting doesn't actually butt up against the pump there is no way a washer of any kind would work so my question is, how am I going to get that fitting properly tightened enough so that it doesn't continue to leak oil? Doesn't seem that the teflon wrap is going to assist in it tightening sooner (although it may still help prevent leaking). Seems like that design on the fitting at that point could have been thought out a little better.

Here's a look at the fitting in question. It is item number 12.

That same part leaked on mine when I first got it waaay back in June '02. I used teflon tape and a crescent wrench and turned it till it lined up with the fitting and was snug. I don't remember if I was 1/4 turn too loose or 3/4 too tight. I would guess I erred towards too tight, 'cause I don't like to leak oil. Hasn't leaked a drop since. : )

Thanks chainsaw. I was able to get it the extra 3/4 turn as well. It would appear that it was short 1 turn prior to my fixing it. Oh well, it was my first fix-it yourself experience with the bike and it went pretty well. Thank god for the service manual.

I did also discover that STP throttle body and carb cleaner makes an excellent engine degreaser.

Its possible the threads on the fitting are cut offline. If you can't get it to not leak, take the fitting to HD/Lowes or Napa and see if you can find one that has the starter thread cut starting 90degrees tighter then the one your taking off.
