I had just under 3K miles since my last oil change plus the bike sat in my business all winter with just a few rides when the weather permitted. I'm running Amsoil V Twin 'cause a friend sells it. I noticed that neutral was a bit tough to find recently but it wasn't a big deal. I made myself a titanium shift lever over the winter with an extended front pivot to make it a short shifter and I attributed the neutral vagueness to that. I changed the primary and crank oil on Wednesday with Amsoil again (used an Amsoil filter too). The drain oil from both was a bit murky, but nothing out of the ordinary - still smelled OK. Both drain plugs had a bit of fuzz on them, but no big pieces. I was pleasantly surprised to see how easy the bike shifted and how easy neutral was to find, Not just a little, but like night and day, no lie. I also noticed that the fan didn't come on every time I stopped, which was really unusual. Now I'm thinking 3K miles is way too long between oil changes. I was talking to Kevin & he says he changes his oil every 1200 miles. | ||

Hey Jerseyguy, I`m glad you brought that up, Here in my neck of da woods I can either run Dino oil ( or Harley Syn. ) or I can get my hands on Amsoil from a local dealer here ( No Mobil oil here at all ) But they have no IDeal which oils to use more into cars , off road stuff it seems so What wd. be the correct engine oil weight ( part numbers if you can get for me ) and tranny fluid as well once again weight and Numbers Thanks Buddy...! | ||

I had the same thing happen to me the last oil change, but I deliberately put a little less in the tranny this time, since the slightest bit too much in there will cause the problem you describe. I knew that was the problem at least in my case. I dunno if you had just a little bit too much in there maybe? | ||

When I changed from Harley transport to mobil 1 syn 75w-90, the same thing happened. Neutral was easy to find where I almost wasn't able to find it with the Harley stuff. Was definitely like night and day. I used a full quart of Mobil 1 and shifting was much better, so I am guessing a quart is not too full for mine. | ||

With a quality Syn, you do NOT need to change oil at 1200 miles unless you are not riding the bike much during the year. I assume you are using Amsoil 20-50 and if it were me, 2500-3000 mile or one year would be the change point. I use M1 75-90 in the trans and the diff between that and the HD Dino stuff was amazing. Night and day! | ||

Ingemar - I drained the primary good when warm & put a whole quart in. It took it to the edge of the clutch spring as suggested in the manual so I don't think it was overfilled. Bruce - I hear ya, maybe it was the sit over the winter. I did run the •••• out of it during my A/F testing the last few weeks. Maybe that had something to do with it too. | ||

Hogs - The Amsoil filter is a SDF10. & the Oil is Amsoil Motorcycle Engine Oil 20W50 for V Twin engines. Seems to work. I make no claims one way or the other. | ||

I'm running Mobil 1 15/50 in the engine and 75/90 in the trans. I noticed once I put in 75/90 in the trans the shifting was improved by a big number. Neutral was much easier to find and it shifted smoother. I tend to run my oil change intervals at around 5-6 months. I ride year round here. | ||

Cataract, with that climate over there, wouldn't it be wise/better/whatever to run a straight SAE 50? Just high jacking this thread by thinking out loud ....  | ||

when my bike was new could hardly find neutral ,had an accident and had to replace primary cover and shifter, i used harley fluid and adjusted the shifter to better suit my riding position and now can easily find neutral, so dont know what to attribute it to. | ||

I run the mobil 1 tranny fluid and change it out about every 3000 miles. I change the oil out at the same time. The last fluid change was a few hundred miles over the 3000 and I could feel a slight degradation of the shifting action. It felt like I needed to adjust the clutch. After the fluid change it was back to normal... Oh, I live in Texas and it doesn't sit for extended periods of time, even in the winter... Kevin | ||

Ingemar, it's Florida, not the Amazon. (Though pretty darn close to it.) Anyways, I do per the manuel do an extent. |
