Posted: Fri Apr 15, 2005 3:51 pm Post subject: Race kit.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have recently fitted the Buell race kit to my XB9S.
I noticed it bangs and pops on the rundown.
Is this normal?
I also think it's quite loud when I heard that they were not supposed to be that loud compared to other pipes.
I was wondering if it is not sealed properly and it is drawing air.
Any help is appreciated as always.

Thanks.

Norrie.

Well yes an exhaust leak will cause popping in the exhaust. Go back and check for leaks. I also have a Buel race kit (muffler, K&N, Race ECM), my bikes pops and spits, not sure if this is typical but I've seen a few post with the same issue. Changing the spark plugs seem to help some. The old plugs gap was bigger than .045, correct gap on my firebolt xb9r is .035.

They could be many reasons why an engine may be backfiring.

My race kit did the same thing. Afterfire on decel, it's normal. The race pipe is loud as far as I'm concerned. I now have a Drummer installed. The power curve is much smoother than the race muffler. Anyway, I still have afterfire on decel. There are no exhaust leaks. I had the Drummer built "quiet" It's still loud for me. I wear ear plugs all the time. I wore them with my KTM Duke Supermoto bike with dual Ackrapovic exhausts and the Buell race pipe as well as the Drummer. I'm sure the Drummer is way NOT loud enough for some but it's more than enough for me.

I just installed a Buell race exhaust and I also find it a bit loud. I thought it was a bit more quiet than that.

I also have afterfire. It's normal because there's less restriction.

"I also have a Buell race kit (muffler, K&N, Race ECM), my bikes pops and spits, not sure if this is typical"

So, is it an automatic side effect of a race kit to backfire on deccel ???

Does everyone's bike w/ a race kit do this (on 9s and 12s) ???

Thanks,

EE

I think afterfire on decel is normal on any XB with K&N, race ECM and any low restriction performance exhaust.

It's not "backfiring"...it's just letting you know it's ticked off cause you let off the throttle! Get back on the throttle, and it will be happy again...

Ha ha

I like it.
I think your right it sounds great when you are on the throttle.
I just wanted to make sure that there wasn't something wrong with it.
I'll need to get better earplugs.

I had a Yamaha R1 with a MIG exhaust on it and on track days, it also had some afterfire on big deceleration I think it's the back pressure due to less restriction in the exhaust, but I'm not an expert...

I don't want to ask you a stupid question, or look like a fool, but did you reset the TPS after you installed the race kit? I don't remember my friends XB9R doing that after the dealer installed his kit.

Ejiii,

What do you mean that you had your Drummer built "quiet?" I emailed them about 4 times, with no answer, about that very thing. How does the loudness compare to the race can?

I asked Kevin Drum to build me a Drummer as quiet as possible because the Buell race pipe, I thought, was to loud. Anyway, "quiet" is a relative term. The pipe is still loud, it just can't be helped. I always wear ear plugs so that's not a big deal to me. The performance of the Drummer is WAY worth the noise in my opinion.

Yes I had the tps reset.
I know why a less restrictive pipe pops and bangs on decel I just didn't expect it with the race kit.
But if it is normal that's fine.

Norrie.
