Okay guys here some stupid or not questions??? On carb. models we know spitting back through the carb. = a sign of a lean mixture either at idle or at cruising most of the times, or when ya give it a shot of gas and theres a slow return to idle, thats a couple anyways, Now If rich well the normal black smoke out the pipes, plug readings, or under hard acceration it falls on its face too rich, NoW.. Not really any of the above will applied to the buells fuel injection system so without any mechanical gear etc.etc what wd. be some clues on the xb`s... Thanks...! |

I'd like to know also, hogs. I'm seeing my pipes return to the blueish purple after a recent plug and O2 sensor change. Is that rich or lean? Anyone? Bueller? |

Kowpow225, Well that could almost happened from just at idle, or low rpms, Brand new pipes installed on HD`s will turn blue or start to just from starting up at idle or there abouts, I just installed a set of new factory pipes on a road king and seen them now starting to turn abit from just a few spins around the yard,If thats lean or rich or just the nature of new pipes...Seen that many times over the years.. |

Come on guys, where are all the old timers that know how to play with the fuel injection systems now instead of the carb. models... Some of you must know some clues on the above, WoW even some of you young fellas might know throw your .02 cents in here as well???? :-)) Will listen to all ideals.. |

Too rich is too rich, too lean is too lean, regardless of the means by which fuel enters the jugs I would think. |

Yup thats for sure... Looking for tell tale signs though, one can tell on carbs. but on fuel injection, What are some tell tale signs ..??? |

If you're running lean (hot) indications can be a cooling fan that's on everywhere you go... exhaust headers that are Blue/Purple halfway down the headers and popping/cracking on deceleration... Rich.. you can never be to rich?...Just kidding.. My guess here would be the constant aroma of fuel... and wet black carbon like exhaust tail pipe(s)... plus real lousy fuel mileage... |

Ingemar and I agree,"Too rich is too rich, too lean is too lean, When she's too lean she'll do a slight wandering at steady throttle...I like to call it the 'third gear polka'. loses lot's O'power in an exponential fashion, the leaner you go. Too rich and power drops slightly and plugs go black quickly. Get 'er to a dyno w/exhaust gas sensing and an eddy brake to map the EFI. |

Looking for tell tale signs though, one can tell on carbs. but on fuel injection, What are some tell tale signs ..??? I think they are the same. |

Am I running lean? I have the popping on decel. the pipes are a bit blue/purpple and the engine "stumbles" at a steady cruise between 3000-4500. I have the following mods on my 04 XB9sl, D&D, K&N, 12 airbox (uncut), and Buell race ecm. Any help would be great. Aaron

Dilysi73, I have had the same problem in the past (the 4300 RBM stumble) for some reason it is really prevelant in the summer months; I really believe it is attributable to the re-blended summer fuel grades offered around the country - In my case, simply changing brands of fuel cures the problem... I also tend to run some octane booster every other tank.. I do this only if I'm filling up at one of those single hose/multi-grade pumps... Also, some blueing on the pipes is normal.. But IMHO if your pipes are dark blue/purple halfway down or more that would seem to indicate a chronic lean condition... |

Dangit Hogs! We want some answers right?!? Dilysi73, Just as a reference point, think of this what you will. I installed my (bad idea to use his name) velocity stack with the wrong type of silicone around 1500 miles or so. (In this case 2 wrongs do make a right.) It wasn't labeled sensor safe. Regular types of silicone much like the type I used is known to contaminate the 02 sensor. So I rode it around a while unknowingly. To make a long story short, my pipes were polished back to a pretty silver with a 'contaminated' 02 sensor in place and never turned back to a purple color in a couple thousand miles of riding. They just went back to yellow. After the sensor change along with the plugs and of course the right type of silicone, they immediately started back to purple. Does that mean it was running rich with the old 02 sensor? That's up for debate. So for the burning question. Does blueing pipes mean rich or lean? Anyone with solid evidence out there? Blueing is normal. If your engine gets too hot your fan will come on often or you would even get the check engine light. |
