I'm new to the Buell world and have a couple of questions: 1) What mods have been made to the Sportster motor (883?) for the XB9S? 2) What mods have been made to the Sportster motor (1200) for the XB12S? Tim |

The XB platform is not a modified sportster. It may share certain specs (the 12 has the same bore, stroke, etc) but I believe that is about it. You're thinking back to the tubers...the pre XB engines were closer to a reworked sportster motor with different mounts, and a hell of a lot better performance. The current Sportster motors and Buell motors are related, but different. They share a lot of parts, particularly on the primary drive and the gearbox. Crankcases are different, with different mounts. The 984 Buell motor uses the 3.5-inch bore from the 1200 Sportster, but with a short, 3 1/8 inch stroke, which lets it rev as high as it does. It makes more power than a stock, or even most lightly modified 1200 Sportsters. The 1200 Buell motor shares its bore and stroke with the 1200, but with different cylinder heads, compression ratios, and cam timing. The Buell fuel-injection system is unique, and completely different than the system that Harley uses. The Buell 1200 is more powerful stock than most well-built 1200cc Sportsters running stock displacement. |

Thanks! I've never had an American bike but I saw an XB9R parked here at work and it took me by surprise. I REALLY liked the quality and cleanness of the bike - and the motor looked GREAT. How about the XB12S vs the XB9S? The XB12S doesn't seem that much heavier (20 lbs?) so the power increase must be substantial over the 9? Tim |

Can I ask about the quality of service at a specific HD dealer on this forum? Or is that considered out-of-line? It is on some m/c forums. Tim |

There's a 10lbs dry weight difference (385 vs. 395). The difference in power is torque. The 9's rev higher, the 12's have a little bit more low end grunt. Both are great to ride. Your best bet is to demo both and feel the difference. The bikes have an excellent fit and finish to them. You can ask whatever you like - not sure if a search will turn up what you're looking for. I'd start it as a new topic posing the question and the excellent BadWeB'rs will respond. (Message edited by CruiSin on April 12, 2005) |

I have owned many bikes, like you I saw the XB9R and was hooked. It was my one and only purchase when I returned from Iraq. It was well worth the wait. Ok, its true… sometimes I just go out in the garage and look at it. Can’t believe I own one. -Chad |

stryker, Man do I know what you mean. I got back from Iraq 30 Dec. Saw my first Buell (XB9sl) on 5 Jan. Bought the same bike on 6 Jan. Almost made the year and change worth every minute.

"Sometimes I'm guilty of looking at my bike in the garage, too" Me three !!! Nothing like a quick polish and a long look when it's too rainy or too cold to ride. A work of art deserves to be admired !!! |

I bought my XB9S in Nov. and had to "go to the garage " for 5 months before I could Ride it. Now that I`ve already got 1300 km(900m),I figured I could stop staring at it, but I still find reason`s to "go to the garage"! |
