Took a ride with the wife, hit Lake Geneva, East Troy, etc. Stopped at Spokes on highway 20 for lunch...nothing great there. Weather at my house was decent, about 55 degrees when we left. Hit Lake Geneva & it was 79 degrees, by the time we got back close to the lake it was down to 63 degrees. I really am not going to miss living next to this big ole heatsink. | ||

The Office told me it was a computer generated speed enforcement day. Yippee, that made me feel better. He said that there lasers can pinpoint a car or bike at just over 1000'. He also said that they really don't do anything until you approach 80 mph. Court date is set for June. I need to decide if I am going to petition that the points get lowered via mail or just pay a lawyer a $100 to go to court for me. The fine is $102, but it is a 4 point violation! | ||

Last time I got a ticket, it was a 4 pointer. Fought it, and they took all the points off, but still paid the $167 fine. All they *REALLY* want is the $$$ I bet you didn't make it home much before we did. Good thing you hurried home  | ||

Well, I had a great time. Unfortunately, it was very busy and we only got 5 passes each, but it was still a blast. So far I've identified my weaknesses as reaction time, launch, anything else before about half track, and apparently on one occassion just holding perfectly still once in the beams (I only have 4 time slips for 5 passes - I'm claiming that the one without the time slip was by far my best  ). I've got the shut down area and return road down cold though. My best run of the night was 13.4. I'm thinking I should be able to get into the 12s, but I've got to get much better. I want to go back out some night during the week when it's not so busy and get more runs so I can get more consistant (I need to add a tach to the bike as well which will hopefully help a little). Anyway, the point is I had a great time and will definately be going back again. | ||

I'm gonna guess, since he didn't have a tach, he had the M2. Jason, what RPM did you launch at to keep the front end down to a controlable level? | ||

I need to install a kill switch for mine before I race at Da Grove. I already know the launch is going to screw me up, too hard & worry about looping, too soft & bog down slightly. Jason you doing the track day on the 25th? | ||

LOL, that was part of the problem. No tach, so I have no idea. It sounded something like "RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR" and I just tried to get the same number of R's for each pass. If I had to guess, I was somewhere around 3000. I should be higher, but I'm trying to sneak up on it. I'll also be flipping the shifter to race pattern (I had no idea you could hit neutral three times going through the first three gears - don't ask). | ||

During the occasional "street race", I'll only use the clutch on 1st - 2nd upshift. After that it's clutchless. I've yet to miss a shift, or hit neutral that way. But I've never had the guts to just dump the clutch. Always ride it from about 3,500, for about 1500RPM. | ||

I was a little worried about looping as well, since after I put the D&D on, I went around the block a few times just to make sure there were no leaks and whatnot and I practiced launching a couple of times. Stood the thing up pretty good on a couple of occassions and thought I really need to watch myself. Basically, I decided I better show up with no ego in hand so as to not try to race who's ever next to me and do something stupid. I'll start worrying about the other lane once I've got my stuff in order (plus Wes was in the other lane and there's really no point in even fantasizing about keeping up with him). The only thing that entered my mind about the other lane was trying to be consistant in how I staged so as to not screw him up. | ||

Jason and/or Dana, Do you think I can mismatch tires? Meaning, if I picked up Dana's 207, can I match that with a 208? | ||

You can mistmatcg those tires with no problems. The 207 wont be the grippiest tire around but for an S3 & the limited amount of lean angle the stock pegs afford it will work fine. | ||

Thanks Greg. That brings up a good point. Should I just get the peg relocators for the S3? They appear easy enough to switch out for track day use.. My only concern would be that I have gotten used to the reversed shift pattern. Not sure I can set the stock (over) linkage up for this use. | ||

Im not sure if Jason had the peg relocators on his S3 last year or not but I do know that he completely ground down a brand new pair of footpegs in just 1 track day. | ||

Kinger, I started with the relocators and then fabricated some new plates that mount to them to raise them another 1 1/2-2" more. I also took a hack saw and removed about 1/2" from my pegs. Coated the ramp of my trailer with Herculiner truck bed liner today. 2 coats & its done, just wait for it to dry now & see how it holds up. | ||

Aaron, I agree with Greg on the mismatched tires (207 with a 208). Not sure about a 208 front and 205 rear though. I don't think I'd personally do it. I'm thinking about getting rid of my relocators and going with full rearsets so if you're interested let me know. I did have them on the day that Greg's talking about and I was still dragging stuff every lap but I still had plenty of room to get off the bike more. They definately added clearance over stock without really compromising comfort so if you want to just leave them on you really wouldn't feel cramped. If you do want to swap back and forth for street and track use, you can do it pretty quickly. One thing to keep in mind is that you do need the new shifter to go with them (so if you're looking at that set on eBay, you will still need to get the Banke shift setup) but your brake pedal will be fine. And after my neutral fest Friday night I immediately looked at the shifter and I pretty sure there's not enough room to flip it for the race pattern but I'll take a closer look at it tonight. | ||

Griz, Check out the link I posted earlier, this is a very simple solution for the shifter, It is a new shift lever that mounts direct, which gives you the reverse pattern. Just a thought. | ||

Got it now, had to reboot. Apparently my Adobe wasn't working right. Anyway, I'll look to see how close that lines up with where I need the shifter in the current setup and if the pegs were further back. Looks promising. Have you seen any bikes using it? | ||

I know one one guy that uses it along with the foot peg mounting plate. As long as the reach is there, you can adjust it up or down on the spline. I thought about but didn't want to be switching gear shift patterns. I have missed a shift or 2 though | ||

Griz that shifter is awesome but you'll need rear sets for it.Hal's used them on there tuber race bike in the past. | ||

Will the newer style shifter (2001) work with the peg risers? I have both shifter styles. Dana, I will let you know about the tire later this week. I think I found a deal on a 208 front to go with it. Tom, that is a nice looking set-up! I called Storz, it is about $450 for the whole rear set set-up. $90 for just the shift lever for reverse pattern. Once you get used to it, it is great. Switched mine on accident when I upgraded my shifter. |
