I know many of you are using Mobil 1 75W90 gear lube in your tranny. My question is to those that have been using it for some time and how their clutch has been doing. While I agree that the gear lube is great for the cogs I'm just not sure of the long term affect on the clutch. Does your clutch feel like it still has good grab (no slippage)? When you drain the oil, does it retain its color or is it dark (possible clutch fibers/wear)? I'm using Mobil 1 20W50 in the tranny and thinking of trying the gear lube next time. Thanks |

I get the same discoloration I have always gotten when changing the fluid on a wet clutch sytem. Other wise I can't say as I have had any problems with the clutch running M1 75-90 and one upside is it takes it longer to get grabby when stuck in heavy stop and go traffic. When the dealer replaced my stator they used Syn 3 by mistake and I left it for 1000 miles of commuting before my left hand just couldn't take the traffic anymore and I swapped it out, changing it again the following day just to make sure the Syn 3 was as gone as possible. |

Here is a question: Would gear lube designed for a Clutch type limited slip differental in a car be better for a motorcycle gearbox? |

as I understand it, no, the material in the MC clutch is different then used in and LSD for a car and the addatives tend to soften and swell the MC friction plates causing the clutch to drag/jam as well as wear quicker. |

Glitch- didn't you have to get your stator replaced too? (Wycked mentions he did.) I read someplace that someone thought something in the gear oil that might eat the stator insulation. Think there's anything to that? |

Nope, sure don't. The clip that holds my stator wire inplace backed out allowing the wire to rub on the spinning housing. |

Mobil 1 75-90 is the deal. Motor oils are NOT engineered to handle the shearing that occurs in trans gears or diffs for that matter. No issues with clutch here. |

I'm thinking of going across the border for M1 gearoil. Besides Walmart, what other retailers supply mobil products? All's I can get in Vancouver is 15/50 m1. So i'd probably stock up with M1 V-twin also. thanks! |

Ted, go to Mobil 1's website; they have a dealer locator section. If you have the zip code for a couple of nearby U.S. cities, you should be able to come up with a list of retailers in the area. Note that their list does NOT seem to be up-to-date as far as retailers carrying Mobil-1 motorcycle products! (ARGH!!!) |

Been using Redline 20w-50 in the engine and trans with no problems. HD certified synthetic 20w-50 suitable for all engines and transmissions, that was good enough for me. |

i have used amsoil75W-90, valvoline 20w-50, mobil 1 15W-50, harley sport-trans fluid, and they all work, doesnt make a darn bit of difference to me. I plan to use the least expensive full synthetic 20W-50 motor oil i can obtain. next change will probably be NAPA branded 20W-50 synthetic, packaged by valvoline, local cost is around $3.85 per QT. |
