in that issue there was an article on helmets and safety stuff. they rated the helmets for safety, noise, visor, and some more. do any of you have that? someone emailed me a scanned copy but it wasn't very viewable. |

Taxman - if I can get my scanner to work and find my issue I'll send it to you. If you don't hear from me in a few days, email me through my profile. |

The article wasn't all that informative. It was more a PR piece for one helmet per manufacturer. I would strongly suggest you follow up with Motorcycle Consumer News concerning their reviews and ratings. They do an excellent job of it much like Consumer Reports as they do not accept any advertising and allow the manufacturers to challenge their findings. Other than that your best source of info is testimonials from downed riders that can explain the type of impact they had and how the helmet worked or failed under the circumstances. Too bad there aren't any living test dummies out there that would hire on to undergo a series of landings with a batch of helmets. LOL Having landed on the top of my head twice like a friggin' spear with Shoei helmets I swear by their RF Series. The helmet prevented any damage to my head and face. The only negative effect the helmet had was a broken collar bone when my neck gave way to the weight of my body during the landing at a near vertical angle and there is no helmet on the market that would prevent that. Not to mention, I have yet to find an armored jacket with the armor close enough to the neck to prevent it either. There have been experiments with helmets with inflatable collars (like airbags) that might have prevented the broken collar bone. However, I believe they were in Europe and may be quite a ways from production. One last thing to remember in comparing helmets is that most accidents result in a glancing impact and not a direct impact like I experienced. As a result, the vast majority of DOT rated full face helmets are adequate for this application even if they don't have the Snell rating like my Shoei's did. |
