perhaps blood of a lab rat? live is never even approached by reproduction, no matter what the means |

I've given up on the crappy quality reproduction on these new copy protected CDs and went back to Vinyl. Astounding difference, I don't know why I was so dazzled by Cds when they came out. I got Cash's last album, and I swear you can hear his fingers actually hitting the strings, not just the sound the strings make. I'm a rabid convert (or is it revert?) the way those PC to Mac convert freaks are. Analog on a decent turntable is the way to go man! |

I won't (and don't even want to) start a wire war. But what I'd like to know from those that deny one can hear the difference in wires, are you actually saying that a regular $10 copper wire (provided it is thick enough) delivers the same quality as a $1500 silver/gold speaker cable? Or is there more to it than that? Think carefully before answer .... |

Ing -- I can only say that I cannot hear the differnece -- it's like arguing about color -- we don't all see the same way, nor do we hear the same way if YOU hear the diff, that's GREAT! |

Ingemar, I did not say you could not hear a difference between wires. You can, in extreme cases. I stand by my statement that what you are getting, and what you more enjoy, is a form of tone control, nothing more, nothing less. Charlie |

My two cents: I think that cables make some difference, but I didn't go nutty and spend huge cash on them. The whole system consists of decent quality stuff I picked up on the cheap. The cables just worked out to be one of the major expenses. I found a couple of pairs of Audioquest "Coral" interconnects on closeout for $50 each and I bought some Canare 4s11 speaker cables on ebay for $80, plus a 100ft role of Monster Cable XP for $60, which I use for everything else. Having used significantly less expensive cable in the past, I can say that I do notice a small difference. However, I have to admit that it may be due to the power conditioner I'm using this time around. Oh and I almost forgot to mention, that my girlfriend does live with me! The magazines on the end table are girly ones i.e. In Touch Weekly, US, Cosmo, and the like. Thats her contribution to the decor. She didnt have to lug everything up that spiral staircase! |

Wives and girlfriends do get in the way of good sound. They seem to be more concerned how things look in the room rather than sound, they just don't understand. |

My wonderful wife does Interior Design and Architecture for a living. She lives for optimal aesthetic/harmonic spacial/room relationships. She says that you are obviously a barbarian in need of professional help. Conversely she says that those suggesting/agreeing that you must turn the couch around, position it near the room entry, and then utilize the facing wall for your entertainment/audio/video systems are gifted intelligent highly civilized individuals who put their integrity at risk associating with the rest of us barbarians on this web site. The woman knows of what she speaks. Way to go Jeremy. And you too (cannot believe this) Rocket? |

I have this theory on speaker cable \ wire and Steve has it pegged for me when he says 'he thinks'. Over the years there are two components to my hi-fi that I've never changed. I've owned my Rega Planar 3 deck since 1986. Before the Rega I bought the Lin Sondek then soon realised a great many of my albums were never gonna play on such a sensitive operator. I was lucky. A friend at the time owned the Rega, bought it new in 1977, and offered me a trade. The Rega is a great deck for very little money. Even now the current Rega is still a top performer from the middle of the market and often out performs high end decks tested by the pro's. Another Rega revelation was finding out in the early 90's when the drive stopped (due to nothing more than dirt and debri of the day - about 5000 of them then) that Rega's are guaranteed for life! The other component I've hung onto over the years is the cable connects. I bought Naim's own stuff years ago and to this day I've never thought about trying to improve the sound of any of my systems by getting better? \ more expensive cable than what I've already got. I don't put this down to ignorance. I just don't believe my aging ears could tell the difference but because I've never been sure I prefer to err on the side of science and one would believe (for example) pure gold would sound better than 2.5mm twin mains cable from Kmart. This conflict applies to the CD v. vinyl argument too but I think I've got that one sussed at long last. Vinyl is simply alive but please don't ask me how I know. Blake, I'm in the middle of moving into my new place. Again it's a 'two up two down' cottage built around 1860\70 and I tell ya I'm so glad it is only four rooms plus bathroom and staircase etc. Every room has needed stripping back to bare walls - amongst other things. Talk about spend spend spend. That said I have enjoyed adding my own personal touches to the place and I can't wait to see the finished product. Especially when my hi-fi is up and running. Stand by for pic's then your good lady can judge better Steve, lovely to hear the place has a womans touch even though it's only a couple of womens magazines I trust you allow her a TV in the kitchen LOL Rocket |

Preach on Rocket! My Planar 3 gets buried with me when I die! With Vinyl, you get higher frequencies that are cropped off of the digi signal on a cd. I was talking to a local audio freak (actually an acoustic engineer) and he says that on vinyl (assuming good gear) there are frequencies that we can't hear that have an effect on the frequencies that we can hear ( it was a 1/2 hour explanation, but that's the gist) that adds to the warmth of the sound. Warmth is the best way I can describe the sound. It isn't much of an argument, I've never heard anybody say cd sound was better than vinyl, more convenient maybe, but all the audio dvd and super audio cd stuff that came out- far superior to regular cd- was always referred to as nearly as good as vinyl but still not quite there. I'm in the market for a new stylus, so I've been reading up... did you know that the tip of the needle is exerting a force of about 14,000psi on the surface of the record? It generates enough heat that it actually melts the vinyl as it passes over it. That's why it's bad to have dust and crap on your records, it can actually melt in to the grooves. |

Odd, I too have been told about the clipping theory and I'm sure it's true. 14000 psi and the fires of hell. No wonder most of my vinyl is worn out!!! Rocket |

Oddbawl, your comment about women getting in the way of good sound is untrue in my wife's case. I've got probably one of the ugliest(but the best bang for the buck)speakers on earth. Very industrial looking. But the wife wanted them REAL bad. They by far sounded the best to her ears. http://www.eminent-tech.com/lft8prod.html And, oh yeah... Planars RULE! |

my wife (also interiror design like Blake's) was dismayed at the rats nest of wies running around the large room in my bachelor pad (couldn't really call it a living room, as it was decorated with the EIAA rack, the sound system, one comfy chair, and stack of scooter parts). . . . . . needless to say, things LOOK better now, and she's a fiend for good bass (which is great for me, having destroyed the highs in my ears years ago) |

Bomber, then she'd love my VMPS subwoofer I don't really use it for music, since the LFT8s do *REALLY* good bass down to 28HZ. http://www.vmpsaudio.com/sub1.htm I've got an older version of the "new larger subwoofer". It'll shake the windows during a movie It's also deceptively fast and musical for it's size. |

>>>>decorated with the EIAA rack Comforting to know I am not the only one who considers an Anvil 19" rack mount case as "fine furniture". I've been trying to decipher which output jack from my computer sound card to plug into which input on my stereo amplifier. Seems simple, to date, the best I've produced is hum. I'm gonna have to cipher on this. Court |
