So my bikes sittin on the side of the road right now, and out of 5 dealers in my immediate area, no one keeps a buell belt stocked. It seems like they should keep a few of them around, but no. Will a sportster belt work? No one in parts depot seems to know anything about these bikes, and its frustrating...along with having my bike on the side of the road for theves to grab while i source one down. thanks guys | ||

Yes, your bike uses a standard 128 tooth sportster belt. If the dealer is an idiot or you don't want to spend the $150 or so for a new belt I have a lightly used one I can sell you for $60. I am in San Antonio, TX so it should ship quickly or you could come pick it up if you want a easy road trip. Just broke the belt on my X-1. It looks like a major pain to change. How hard is it with just average garage tools and some mechanical skill. I have a Buell shop manual and it recommends some kinda rear wheel stand. | ||

X1 belts are a breese thanks to the removeable sideplate. takes about 30 minutes but you do need to suspend the rear to remove the rear wheel. | ||

I use the passenger foot rests(mounts) and 2 auto jack stands.  | ||

Sir thank you for correcting me, I use the passenger peg mounts to lift the wheel clear of the ground for cleaning, brake service and belt tension checks. This will not work for a belt change  | ||

no need to r&r the wheel to replcae the belt on an X1 -- leave the scoot on the side stand, loosen the wheel adjusters to get some slack, remove the side plate (and hugger et al), slip the belt off (already done if broken), slip the new one on, button her back up, adjust the wheel, and ride off into the sunset make sure ya don't put a lot of weight on the bike while the side pat is removed, for obvious reasons we've replaced a couple a three X1 belts in the field this way -- once initla "aw shucks" were gotten over, it was a breeze | ||

In the service manual it talks about the isolator. It says don't take the bolt out, then it goes into detail about putting the isolator back in and being cautious about bolts and the isolator seams being straight and such. Is this just in case a person does take the isolator bolt out, or does it need to come out. Just a little concerned about the isolator and how the manual seems to say two things. Thanks to all! The isolator has an alignment pin so it can only go in one way. But you don't have to remove the isolator to change the belt on an X1 just the sideplate. | ||

Dawg -- I've learned sooooo much from this joynt (and the denizens what live here), my karma account is still way overdrawn -- anything I can do to help is a joy -- Jay over on ATC, years ago, was mumbling about fitting a plate to his MaDeuece -- dunno if he ever actually did it or not before he took ill, but it'd be a great mod to an M or S class tuber -- but, way beyond my fabricating skills, I'm afraid like Dan sez, no need to remove the iso or it's bolt on an X1 -- just make sure you gentle the plate back into place with everything lined up nice -- it's fiddly, but doable, on the side of the road, in the gravel, at night -- mostly, ya just gotta keep the nervous bike owner occupied getting wrenches you don't need and beer you do (and him outa yer hair ;-} ) |
