If the govt would let free markets remain free and stop tinkering, the underlying price dynamic would move folks towards alteratives and alternatives towards these folks.
But............. hey, it is more fun to tinker and believe somehow you are smarter than the rest of us. That is why we have govt officials, right?
BTW- we are not allowed to buy diesel cars here in Kalifornia!!!!!!!!! |

Well, you could if they would institute some smog test procedures for the things.
Following a Mercedes or other diesel car out there in So Cal made me want to vomit when my helmet filled up with the smoke and aroma those things would just dump all over the place.
Hell, it was even bad in my car and I couln't lane split with that. LOL |

Refinery capacity is not even close to demand in the US. We are bringing in tankers of Gasoline, refined in Europe. ( the "advantage" of govt's that don't listen to the people as much as our's? LOL )
Hydrogen is not the answer to energy needs, since more energy is used to crack water, or refine from oil ( duh, need oil to crack ) than burning the hydrogen produces. It does reduce carbon emissions, at the tailpipe, but may not in the overall world. Cheap, clean Nuclear power has the potential to make Hydrogen as a storage medium practical, but I don't see any other power source that can. ( Fusion is working already, right? it's been more than 20 years since they promised we would have a fusion economy in 20 years. )
The less out than in argument is the reason that alcohol, made from grain, is not the answer, long term. Methanol, made from waste, ( methane is a pain to transport, but very useful in fixed applications ) is good, but may require special Catalysts to burn clean enough for Kalifornia.
I'm looking at the Liberty Diesel too, better mileage than the minivan, & better towing capacity for the trailer I would need to make up for the lack of cargo space????
Best solution is to ride the best mileage vehicle I got. Oh! It's my Buell. |

Outrider, you haven't ridden behind any of the latest generation of diesel cars then. If you take the badges off it's virtually impossible to tell the difference between a diesel & gas powered car, both in terms of emissions & performance.
I grant you the old merc diesels were smoky to say the least, but the latest common-rail direct injection turbo-diesels are fantastic, & the next generation of cam-free engines will be even better. (as long as the electronics hold out anyway)
Come on Blake, take your tongue out your cheek. EVERYTHING has to do with tax revenue one way or another, & when the processing companies find a way to reduce the unit cost to a competitive level (& they will I'm sure) you'll see government policies doing some major shifting to take advantage of it.
Just think about it, the US could be largely self sufficient, with a mix of renewable & fossil fuels, a country like Canada, if it made the investment, could be totally self sufficient in renewable energy. So why hasn't it been done? Brazil is nearly there, I can only conclude that those at the top who hold the reins & drive the wagon are taking the route that suits them, & that's not free market capitalism, that's democracy.  |

Fossil fuels in Europe carry some of the highest taxes in the world.
Unleaded in the UK costs near 6 bucks a gallon, it's similar here in france.
Diesel in the UK is generally slightly more expensive than gas & here it's around 20% cheaper.
Spain is quite a bit cheaper, but still nowhere near as low as the US.
Some European countries give partial rebates to tranport operators, to offset the costs, but for Joe public, no.
If you Smoke, Drink, or Drive (not all at the same time please) you're a cash cow for the government. They know it, you know it, but they've got you by the short & curlies, & everyone knows that too.
The other side of the coin is that all this tax money funds the social health & welfare systems that we enjoy here.
Yeah sure I'd like to live in a place where tax is low & hospitals are free & there are two postal deliveries every day, & the tarmac is smooth, & it never rains in the daytime, anyone know where that is? |
